The windy Elim ward is the ideal terroir for the Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and cool climate Syrah. This ward is named after the quaint little town situated close to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa.
Founded in 1824, the historic village of Elim is home to the Moravian Mission Station.
The name Elim, meaning "place of God", originates from a biblical reference in Exodus 15:27. After crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites came to Elim, where they found twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and camped near the water.
Cape Agulhas's Elim, like the biblical Elim, is an oasis in its own right. The town and its surrounding vineyards and farms have a lot of natural springs, keeping the water tables healthy.
And similarly to the Israelites, many slaves found their way to Elim after slavery was abolished in 1834.
Today, many of Elim's residents descend from these slaves – hence the propensity of surnames like "Tuesday" in Elim: In the 19th century, slaves took on the name of the day on which they were freed.
The mission town's original Moravian Church still stands today, as well as its slave freedom memorial (the only one in the country).
The vineyards in Elim have just started flowering. As a result of the cooler climate, flowering takes place a little later. Luckily, the flowering missed the strong winds the previous week - which could have caused a bit of upset resulting in less berry set and lower yield.
But then again, praise to the wind as it is our saving grace by keeping the moisture at bay.
All in all, the vineyards are looking very healthy, strong and even growth thus far.

17 November: Tasting with Wine Tasters’ Guild of SA
I had been invited to join the Wine Taster's Guild of SA's monthly tasting, themed "Young Guns", this past Saturday.
Along with Riandri Visser from Cape Point Vineyards, I presented four of my wines at the tasting event, held at Café Roux in Noordhoek. What a delight it's been to present to an informative group, with a genuine interest in wine and an audience keen to learn more about Elim.

Bruce Jack Wines launch in London
Bruce Jack is launching his new brand Bruce Jack Wines in London this week.
I have been invited by this incredible human being to share this special occasion with him. Six other winemakers and I will be showcasing our wines at the walk-through tasting, and I will pair one of my older wines with lunch. Can't wait!
