With the start of a fresh year, it means Harvest 2021 is on our doorstep and my visits to Elim and other vineyards are becoming more and more frequent.
It seems that 2021 promises to be an interesting one as I noticed a few changes in the climate from the end of last year. The late rain of 2020 together with the high levels of humidity so-far poses new challenges, but is luckily not too uncommon for the Elim ward - being a cool climate area. Harvest seems to be 2 weeks later than last year.
The crop is looking healthy and our farmers are on top of it to ensure the absolute best for 2021’s harvest.
Every year has its challenges and it is exactly these challenges that test a winemaker’s ability to adapt and cultivate new techniques as times shift and change. I am positive that this year, although interesting, will be a great one as I complete the full circle with making wines back in Elim again - where it all started 13 years ago!
