HELLO ALL YOU WONDERFUL WINE PEOPLE
FAREWELL HARVEST 2021
For most of us, 2021 started as a blur due to the lock-down regulations of December 2020. Now we find ourselves almost mid-year and asking 'where has the first half gone?', while simultaneously looking back over Harvest 2021 and kind of being in disbelief that it has already passed. Despite the slightly challenging weather conditions and fast-tracking of time, I am happy with the outcome!
The weather forecast came as no surprise (being the unpredictable Cape) when unexpected rains closed in over the Western Cape in the 2nd/3rd week of March.
By this time not only was the harvest already delayed due to late flowering, but these unforeseen rains made it quite a tough but quick call whether to harvest the last blocks of Syrah in Elim before or after the rain. I decided to do both in the end, picking half the blocks before and finishing off the rest after the rains in pursuit of balancing out the concentration of the various grapes.
With the help of the incredible team at Black Oystercatcher Cellar, all the wines are currently in barrel - and we'll look at the blends in a few months time.

THE LATEST EVENT: MPUMALANGA & KZN TRADE TASTINGS
As many of you may not know, I have held the bushveld incredibly dear to my heart since childhood. Ever since I could remember my parents would annually take our family to The Kruger National Park - often excusing us from school and highlighting it as an educational holiday. This experience from such an early age has shaped in many regards the way in which I view life and the course my life took. Before winemaking, I was dead set on becoming a game ranger and so my biggest dream of course was to work in the Kruger.
Fast forward many moons, ... I have finally managed to manifest that childhood dream! Not as a game ranger, but I finally got to 'work' in the Kruger as a winemaker - trade visiting Mpumalanga, Skukuza Shalati and Sabie Sands! Not only did a lifelong dream come true, but I'm also thrilled that my wines are now listed at these astonishing sites!
A big thanks to Stephan Niehaus who represents me in Mpumalanga for making all of this happen!
Do you love wine, art and good company?
Be sure to save the following dates because my next trade visit to KwaZulu-Natal

Up for auction and sponsored by Dawn Patrol Wines is a 7'0 Torreyn Martyn shaped surfboard with stunning custom artwork done by Leigh. The auction's proceeds will go in support of Surfpop's initiative in helping kids from the Masiphumelele Township through surf therapy, education and an after school feeding scheme.
