The month of August started with my favourite wine event of the year - the Vintner's Surf Classic.
I competed in the 19th edition of the local wine industry’s biggest annual surfing competition.
This amazingly unique surf event has grown from its humble beginnings in 2000 to this year’s edition seeing 67 surfers battle it out for the title of the best winemaking surfer.
Nothing beats the atmosphere during Vintner's - surfing all day with your winemaker friends is the reason that this is the best day of our working calendar.
The conditions were highly contestable.
In the morning, the surf was quite small. But luckily the waves picked up as the tide came in, so we had a decent heat during the second round.
An exclusive Women's heat
All in all, it was great to finally surf an all-
s heat for the first time in the 10 years that I have competed in the Vintners – so that’s definitely a highlight.
May this trend continue each year, with many more women winemaker surfers competing in future.
Special indeed seeing that August is the month of celebrating all women in South Africa, isn't it?
Congratulations to Bevan Newton Johnson (masters/
ballies), Faan Rabie (juniors/open), Pieter Walser (veterans/seniors)  and  I was lucky to have won the ladies division - just! ;)
The Big Red is a magnum bottle of wine that is made each year from wine by all the entrants of the Vintner's Surf Classic. Besides the compulsory 5 litres (entry fee), each contestant can also donate 25 litres of red wine, which then forms a semi-commercial limited edition blend.
The bottles of the 2014 Big Red are now available to buy
online from The Vineyard Connection - R630 per bottle, of which R500 will be donated to Surf4Life.
The Surf4Life organisation aims to take disadvantaged people and introduce them to the wonderful world of surfing, making them part of a lifestyle that celebrates the fun and excitement of surfing.
I am delighted to have received the “Stand Out Elegant and Classy Red Wine” award for my Reserve Syrah 2017  at the Sommeliers Selection last month!
The Sommeliers Selection is the first South African wine competition that is judged solely by a panel of our country’s top sommeliers.

19 - 20 August: Joburg Trip
I have just returned from Jozi where a bunch of us winemakers represented by
Ex Animo showcased our wines at the super suave La Boqueria wine party. An incredible day chatting and connecting with the guests about the wine, enjoying the brilliant band and scrumptious canapes. Thanks for all the amazing support in buying my wines.
Day 2 included another collective wine tasting at Thief Restaurant with my peers - and showcasing and discussing our wines with the Jozi trade - again, thank you for the time spent in getting to hear our stories and tasting our wines.
30 August: Women winemakers Wine Tasting
To celebrate Women's month, I will be presenting my wine and sharing my wine journey at this event at Simon Wine bar in De Warenmarkt, Stellenbosch alongside two phenomenal women winemakers: Cathy Marshall and Jeanine Craven.
We will be introducing 10 wines from 3 regions, paired with the scrumptious dishes by chef Shaun Schoeman.
