Garter snakes are the most common snakes in Nebraska. These snakes are attracted to warm objects because they provide them with heat that they need for digestion and growth. They actually prefer urban and suburban yards over farm locations.
Some advice for when you see a snake is to never intentionally approach the snake. Snakes do not normally strike unless they are provoked or feel threatened. If you do have a snake problem on your property it is best to contact a professional.
Some Things to Remember:
Snakes prefer dark places away from sunlight. Some people have found them underneath their home, in undisturbed boxes or buckets, or even piles of wood that have not been moved in a while. Common entry points for snakes to enter your home are foundation cracks or unsealed crawl spaces.
In order to help prevent snakes from living around your home would be to eliminate the food they eat such as rodents, mice, and other similar pests. If you are seeing snakes close to your home, you may have another pest problem to address.
