Poisonous Snake Encounters
As the temperatures begin to warm, outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, hunting, fishing and camping will become more popular. According to a report in the Lincoln Journal Star, "Venomous snakes are expanding into southeast Nebraska." Some understanding of the poisonous snakes in your area can help you enjoy outdoor activities without fear of snakes.
Identifying Poisonous Snakes
Being able to identify venomous snakes in Nebraska could save your life. One easy way to identify venomous snakes is to closely look below their eyes. All venomous snakes in Nebraska have white lines above and below their eyes.
What To Do If Bitten
If you are unfortunate enough to be bitten, try to remain calm. First, try to remember all of the physical details of the snake, such as color and its markings. These details will help determine whether the snake was poisonous and, if so, what type of antivenom needs to be administered. If there's a chance, it could be poisonous, dial 911, and stay as still as possible. Taking yourself to a doctor or hospital may be acceptable if you are sure the snake is nonvenomous. If you are uncertain about the snake, stay put. You do not want to risk experiencing debilitating symptoms while you are driving.
Quick Tips To Snake Proof Your Home
  1. Close holes in your home's foundation with caulk. Most snakes can't dig their own holes, so they look for existing ones.
  2. Use lava rock for the landscaping around your foundation. The rock is sharp, so snakes don't like to burrow in it.
  3. Cover any dryer vents that are less than 2 feet from the ground with a screen. Often calls come in from people in the fall who find snakes in their dryers as temperatures cool off.
