Anam Cara Meditation Foundation
         Nourishing meditators since 2001
Living radically free unfolds from going beyond the mind, which then transforms the mind from jailer to sublime creator. Imprisoned by identification with the roles we play, the reactivity of the mind/body, wants and needs, longing and anger... we live between ephemeral joys and bouts of suffering. Buddhas, sages, and saints have pursued the mystic way through the dark portal into the luminous field of boundless Awareness, an unimaginable abundance of Being, being all, being an ocean of compassion, an all embracing Light of Love, an unfathomable reservoir of wisdom, and the unimpeded power of Grace. That's what lies just the other side of the veil of thoughts, feelings, memories, etc. that make up the mind and our ordinary sense of self. As Lawrence explains in this dharma talk, all of our everyday experiences of who we are and who others are, can be seen as emerging from ignorance of our true nature. All meditative practices and all the various forms of yoga are aimed at cutting through that ignorance. Knowing his true nature beyond the self-constructs of mind, Buddha found permanent freedom from suffering. Knowing the truth of oneness with God, Christ and many of his saints and mystics down through the ages realized that there is no other, no "I" but God. This is the same realization of the ancient sages who proclaimed the non-duality of ultimate knowing in the Upanishads thousands of years ago.  Come home to your divine Self and know this directly.

Sofia's Gifts

Four Quartets by T. S. Eliot
Excerpt from Burnt Norton

At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.
I can only say, there we have been: but I cannot say where.
And I cannot say, how long, for that is to place it in time.
The inner freedom from the practical desire,
The release from action and suffering, release from the inner
And the outer compulsion, yet surrounded
By a grace of sense, a white light still and moving,
Erhebung without motion, concentration
Without elimination, both a new world
And the old made explicit, understood
In the completion of its partial ecstasy,
The resolution of its partial horror.
Yet the enchainment of past and future
Woven in the weakness of the changing body,
Protects mankind from heaven and damnation
Which flesh cannot endure.
                                                    Time past and time future
Allow but a little consciousness.
To be conscious is not to be in time....

This short (13min.) guided meditation practice by Lawrence is especially good for when we feel stressed, agitated, caught in the whirlwind of life. It brings us back to the steady presence of the Self, like a majestic mountain, unmoved by the winds and storms of the world. Your essence has that majestic, steady, magnificent quality of Presence, eternally present, the power of Consciousness. Come home to simply Being, Being Present as your highest Self, empowered to bring the fullness of who you truly are into the world. Take refuge in that, take comfort and rest in that. Tat Twam Asi! Thou Art That! That is the universal Self.

Given the state of turmoil in the world, it is especially important that we have an inner state of calm centeredness that empowers us to bring wisdom, compassion and transformation into the world. This is Dharma in action, living a dedicated life of practice and seva in the world.  The practices protect and envelop us in Dharma Shakti, the power of Dharma.  Adhering to dharma, the ego mind becomes a selfless servant of All, the One that has become the many. Meditation culminates in knowing directly that you are the One and the many, nothing left out.  Tat twam asi!  Thou Art That!

In this dark age, when dharma is on her last leg, we are her legs, we have to stand for dharma, walk dharma into the world, be dharma warriors actively walking love, compassion, wisdom and service into the world. In the past it was fine to wrap oneself in practices, merge into unity Consciousness and let go of the rest of the world.  Not now!  Out of the caves, out of monasteries, off our cushions, we have to take dharma, the truth, the love, the wisdom, the compassion, and the practices, fearlessly into all environments. We may cry a river of tears for all the pain and suffering in the world even as we stand as a pillar of fire, the fire of love and compassion, illuminating the way forward, the way of dharma in action.

Be the light that illumines all around you! You are the living Presence of the Divine!  Be true to your true nature!

When I was offering meditation programs in prisons for years I saw the power of grace, Shakti Kundalini, inherent in the mantras and practices, transform even the lives of murderers.  We need to bring the power of our practices, wisdom, love and service into the halls of power, into government and corporate headquarters and into under-served communities.  The economic and political systems we've evolved are the epitome of kali yuga - profits above all, empty, afflicted individuals voraciously consuming the environment and oppressing people with no end to their hunger for power and possessions.  Our afflicted, unconscious, and undisciplined minds give rise to endless suffering.  We can view the mind, our own and others, with understanding and compassion as we endeavor to create global change.

May our practices empower us to be agents of wakefulness, love and compassion as we work to transform our world.

Meditation is key to our inner and outer transformation. Through meditation we directly experience our innate fullness, free of want or need.  In meditation we directly experience our unity with all - the illusion of "other" is dispelled.

There is only One, the Divine, known by many different names, but always One. One all-embracing Divine, One all-embracing Love.  Tat Twam Asi!  Thou Art That!

As a non-profit educational organization we are grateful for the support of participants and donors whose generosity makes all this possible. Because of your generous gifts we are in our 20th year of serving meditators and seekers around the world. I deeply appreciate the many ways people help us to fulfill our mission, including sharing this newsletter with others and telling people about our programs.  It's a privilege for me to serve the Anam Cara community.  Please contact me, le@anamcara-ny.org, if you have anything you would like to share with me.

With love and respect for all,
