Anam Cara Meditation Foundation
         Nourishing meditators since 2001
The power of Consciousness, known as Shakti in the Eastern traditions, is the root power of mantra, as well as the power that creates and sustains all of creation. As the power of mantra it transforms our limited consciousness of self into the universal, boundless Consciousness of Self. This is the Infinite One, the Eternal One, known by so many names, but always the One, the Source. Know yourself as That, Tat Twam Asi, Thou Art That, and know freedom from suffering and death. The great Death Defying mantra, the Mahamritunjaya Mantra, also known as the Tryambakam Mantra, is a throb of the Infinite known as Shiva - the Auspicious One. For thousands of years seekers have taken refuge in this mantra from the Rig Vedas, as a sound form of the Infinite, to go beyond suffering and death.
OM. Tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushti-vardhanam urvarukamiva bandhanan mrityor mukshiya mamritat.
Chanting this mantra is an invitation to merge back into your own Divine Source, the Self of all, the Divine Within.

I WAS THERE

I was there.
I wore the thread,
carried the mark
on my forehead,
spread my deerskin
in the forest,
performed the ritual dance
where each small gesture
was a secret code.

I fasted the long holy days,
bathed in the sacred river,
chanted the hymns of devotion,
mated with the Other in ecstatic bliss.

Oh, Shiva,
I look and cannot find you..
My life is a river gone dry.
I cry out and hear
only an echo.

All I have left is this small sculpture
and holy longing,
a wave of feeling now and again.
And then this memory,
this stirring,
this yearning to return.

Dear Friends,

Our mission at Anam Cara is to make meditation training freely available to everyone and to support people in their ongoing meditation practices. We do this through free weekly programs now on Zoom, our website, YouTube, and this e-newsletter.

Please subscribe to our YouTube channel for free and "like" the videos you enjoy!  Simply doing this helps to make our offerings more available to others.

The Thursday night meditation group Zoom link with added security is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/665891390?pwd=RDBZSFBTd0dpNTZwQzFoKzVEUUtYdz09. Given the state of turmoil in the world, it is especially important that we have an inner state of calm centeredness that empowers us to bring wisdom, compassion and transformation into the world. This is Dharma in action, living a dedicated life of practice and seva in the world.  The practices protect and envelop us in Dharma Shakti, the power of Dharma.  Mahatma Gandhi, quoting the Bhagavad Gita, said, "where there's dharma, there is victory."  My early teacher, Trungpa Rinpoche, spoke about this as the way of the Shambhala Warrior - energetically bringing dharma, compassion, loving-kindness, generosity and peace into the world.  Be a powerful embodiment of that, your highest nature.  In this way, adhering to dharma, the ego mind becomes a selfless servant of All, the One that has become the many. Meditation culminates in knowing directly that you are the One and the many, nothing left out.  Tat twam asi!  Thou Art That!  Empowered by that direct knowing we stand firm for dharma in the world, we walk dharma into the world to help relieve the suffering of all beings.

In this dark age, when dharma is on her last leg, we are her legs, we have to stand for dharma, walk dharma into the world, be dharma warriors actively walking love, compassion, wisdom and service into the world. In the past it was fine to wrap oneself in practices, merge into unity Consciousness and let go of the rest of the world.  Not now!  Out of the caves, out of monasteries, off our cushions, we have to take dharma, the truth, the love, the wisdom, the compassion, and the practices, fearlessly into all environments. We may cry a river of tears for all the pain and suffering in the world even as we stand as a pillar of fire, the fire of love and compassion, illuminating the way forward, the way of dharma in action.

Be the light that illumines all around you! You are the living Presence of the Divine!  Be true to your true nature!

When I was offering meditation programs in prisons for years I saw the power of grace, Shakti Kundalini, inherent in the mantras and practices, transform even the lives of murderers.  We need to bring the power of our practices, wisdom, love and service into the halls of power, into government and corporate headquarters and into under-served communities.  The economic and political systems we've evolved are the epitome of kali yuga - profits above all, empty, afflicted individuals voraciously consuming the environment and oppressing people with no end to their hunger for power and possessions.  Our afflicted, unconscious, and undisciplined minds give rise to endless suffering.  We can view the mind, our own and others, with understanding and compassion as we endeavor to create global change.

May our practices empower us to be agents of wakefulness, love and compassion as we work to transform our world.

Meditation is key to our inner and outer transformation. Through meditation we directly experience our innate fullness, free of want or need.  In meditation we directly experience our unity with all - the illusion of "other" is dispelled.

There is only One, the Divine, known by many different names, but always One. One all-embracing Divine, One all-embracing Love.  Tat Twam Asi!  Thou Art That!

As a non-profit educational organization we are grateful for the support of participants and donors whose generosity makes all this possible. Because of your generous gifts we are in our 20th year of serving meditators and seekers around the world. I deeply appreciate the many ways people help us to fulfill our mission, including sharing this newsletter with others and telling people about our programs.  It's a privilege for me to serve the Anam Cara community.  Please contact me, le@anamcara-ny.org, if you have anything you would like to share with me.
