This satsang occurred during Navaratri, the 9 nights for celebrating Ma Kali, Ma Durga in October 2020. Kali is Shakti, the creative force of universal Consciousness. She is the Divine Mother who gives birth to all forms, including mantras, which are a direct means for attaining ultimate freedom through union with the One. Om Kali Ma! Jai Kali Ma! Through readings from Ramprasad Sen, the 18th century saint and devotee of Ma Kali, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, the extraordinary 19th century sage and lover of Kali, and poetry from Kali's Bazaar, penned by Kalidas, Lawrence shares an intimate connection with Ma Kali. Her gifts of grace and radical freedom are received through her overwhelming love and ecstatic states of union. She gives the gift of true Self knowledge. You come to know the Divine by becoming the Divine, merging in the Divine, reveling in the One present in all times and all places! Ma Kali invites everyone to come home to that blissful Self, Shiva/Shakti, beyond names and forms and encompassing all names and forms. Mother of the Universe: Visions of the Goddess and Tantric Hymns of Enlightment by Lex Hixon
Poetry of Ramprasad Sen, 18th century ecstatic mystic and lover of Ma Kali.

Gaze into your original face!

Mother! Mother! Mother!
Your dream-play universe is sheer delight.
Souls caught in the seriousness of your drama
are constantly running, looking for release.
The egocentric bind themselves,
mindlessly repeating:
this is I, that is mine.
But souls who know their own boundless nature
are free and happy under every condition.

O my childish mind, you assume Mother's display of names and forms
to be substantial and real,
participating with such anxiety and self-importance.
What are these objects and opinions
you claim to dominate and to possess?
What is this self you imagine yourself to be?
What exists apart from the timeless awareness
that is the core of all experience?
O mind, who is there to worship whom?
Joy and sorrow are simply Mother Kali's play.
Neither is her reality.

Kindling the bright light of nondual wisdom
within the dark room of mere convention,
discover the treasure of essence
and conceal it in the heart without a trace.
Refusing to play a role in the drama of religion
carefully put out the light again.

This poet, intoxicated by stealing away with the truth,
cries out to every unique seeker of truth:
"Now lift the curtain of relative existence
and gaze into your own original face!"

Dear Friends,

Our mission at Anam Cara is to make meditation training freely available to everyone and to support people in their ongoing meditation practices. We do this through free weekly programs now on Zoom, our website, YouTube, and this e-newsletter.

Please subscribe to our YouTube channel for free and "like" the videos you enjoy!  Simply doing this helps to make our offerings more available to others.

Given the state of turmoil in the world, it is especially important that we have an inner state of calm centeredness that empowers us to bring wisdom, compassion and transformation into the world. This is Dharma in action, living a dedicated life of practice and seva in the world.  The practices protect and envelop us in Dharma Shakti, the power of Dharma.  Adhering to dharma, the ego mind becomes a selfless servant of All, the One that has become the many. Meditation culminates in knowing directly that you are the One and the many, nothing left out.  Tat twam asi!  Thou Art That!

In this dark age, when dharma is on her last leg, we are her legs, we have to stand for dharma, walk dharma into the world, be dharma warriors actively walking love, compassion, wisdom and service into the world. In the past it was fine to wrap oneself in practices, merge into unity Consciousness and let go of the rest of the world.  Not now!  Out of the caves, out of monasteries, off our cushions, we have to take dharma, the truth, the love, the wisdom, the compassion, and the practices, fearlessly into all environments. We may cry a river of tears for all the pain and suffering in the world even as we stand as a pillar of fire, the fire of love and compassion, illuminating the way forward, the way of dharma in action.

Be the light that illumines all around you! You are the living Presence of the Divine!  Be true to your true nature!

When I was offering meditation programs in prisons for years I saw the power of grace, Shakti Kundalini, inherent in the mantras and practices, transform even the lives of murderers.  We need to bring the power of our practices, wisdom, love and service into the halls of power, into government and corporate headquarters and into under-served communities.  The economic and political systems we've evolved are the epitome of kali yuga - profits above all, empty, afflicted individuals voraciously consuming the environment and oppressing people with no end to their hunger for power and possessions.  Our afflicted, unconscious, and undisciplined minds give rise to endless suffering.  We can view the mind, our own and others, with understanding and compassion as we endeavor to create global change.

May our practices empower us to be agents of wakefulness, love and compassion as we work to transform our economic and political systems.

Meditation is key to our inner and outer transformation. Through meditation we directly experience our innate fullness, free of want or need.  In meditation we directly experience our unity with all - the illusion of "other" is dispelled.

There is only One, the Divine, known by many different names, but always One. One all-embracing Divine, One all-embracing Love.  Tat Twam Asi!  Thou Art That!

As a non-profit educational organization we are grateful for the support of participants and donors whose generosity makes all this possible. Because of your generous gifts we are in our 20th year of serving meditators and seekers around the world. I deeply appreciate the many ways people help us to fulfill our mission, including sharing this newsletter with others and telling people about our programs.  It's a privilege for me to serve the Anam Cara community.  Please contact me, le@anamcara-ny.org, if you have anything you would like to share with me.

With love and respect for all,
