LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA, JOHN KANDER & SUSAN STROMAN TEAM UP FOR NEW YORK, NEW YORK MUSICAL
Lin-Manuel Miranda, John Kander, and Susan Stroman are joining forces on a new Broadway musical. A stage show loosely based on Martin Scorsese’s 1977 film New York, New York will begin performances at a Broadway theater to be announced in March 2023, according to reports. Opening night will take place in April. Stroman is set to direct and choreograph the show, which will feature numbers written for the movie by the legendary songwriting team of John Kander and Fred Ebb. Miranda will write additional lyrics for new Kander songs. David Thompson and Sharon Washington will serve as co-writers for the book. The 1977 film tracks a jazz saxophonist and a pop singer, played on screen by Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli, whose marriage falls apart after their careers take them on different paths. The stage musical will reportedly not include either of these characters. The story is being kept under wraps. This New York, New York production will be set in 1946.


ORIGINAL CAST & COMPANY CELEBRATE GOWER CHAMPION AT 42ND STREET ANNIVERSARY ON BROADWAY
Members of the original Broadway cast and company of the Tony Award-winning 42nd Street, gathered on August 25 to celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the musical comedy. Produced by David Merrick and directed and choreographed by Gower Champion, the show made Broadway history. Their opening night made worldwide news 42 years ago, when, after 15 curtain calls, legendary producer Merrick came on stage and announced to the stunned cast, company, and star-studded audience that Gower Champion had died that afternoon. Because of the Covid 19 pandemic, the cast and company of 42nd Street were deprived of a 40th Anniversary gathering. The 2022 celebration was so big it had to be divided into two separate events, one public on August 24 and one private on August 25. On August 24, 2022 Dancers Over 40 (DO40; president John Sefakis) presented a one-night-only special event: Come and Meet Those Dancing Feet: The 42nd Anniversary and Reunion of 42nd Street at the Triad Theatre in New York City. It was hosted by Lee Roy Reams, the original Tony Award-nominated Billy Lawler.

MOVIE TRAILER RELEASED OF CYNTHIA ERIVO & TOM HANKS IN DISNEY’S LIVE ACTION PINOCCHIO
The 1940’s classic movie Pinocchio will return to the big screen with Oscar winner Tom Hanks playing the role of Geppetto. The story that has touched an entire generation will be back to bring nostalgia and a new point of view. The trailer for Disney’s star-studded, live-action remake of has been released, and it’s truly magical. In addition to Hanks, Pinocchio features Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key as Honest John, and Luke Evans as the Coachman. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth voices the title role. Academy Award winner Robert Zemeckis directs this live action and CGI retelling of the beloved tale of a wooden puppet who embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy. The film will arrive on Disney+ on September 8.

NETFLIX SETS MATILDA THE MUSICAL MOVIE STREAMING DATE
Netflix has announced the new film adaptation of Matilda the Musical will begin streaming on December 25. The film will also be released in select theaters on December 9. An adaptation of the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical, Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical tells the story of Matilda Wormwood (Alisha Weir), a little girl with big curiosity, a sharp mind and a vivid imagination, and the worst parents in the world. Directed by Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus, the film is produced by Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan for Working Title, Jon Finn, and Luke Kelly of The Roald Dahl Story Company. Screenwriter Dennis Kelly adapts the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production for the big screen, with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

KINKY BOOTS CELEBRATES OPENING NIGHT OFF-BROADWAY AT STAGE 42
The Off-Broadway engagement of the Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical, Kinky Boots celebrated its big NYC return with a splashy opening night at Stage 42. Kinky Boots features 16 original songs by Cyndi Lauper, a book by Harvey Fierstein, and direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell. Kinky Boots stars Callum Francis reprising the role of Lola, Christian Douglas as Charlie Price, Danielle Hope as Lauren, Brianna Stoute as Nicola, Sean Steele as Don, and Marcus Neville, reprising his role of George from the Broadway production. Kinky Boots is the winner of every major best musical award, including the Tony, the Grammy, and London’s Olivier Award. Kinky Boots originally opened on April 4, 2013 and enjoyed a successful six-year Broadway run and continues being presented all over the world.

ROBERT LuPONE, A CHORUS LINE TONY NOMINEE & MCC THEATER FOUNDER, DIES AT 76
Robert LuPone, founder and artistic director of MCC Theater and Tony-nominated A Chorus Line cast member, died on August 27 following a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 76. LuPone’s first professional job was in the ensemble of Westbury Music Fair’s production of The Pajama Game, starring Liza Minnelli. He made his Broadway debut in Noel Coward’s Sweet Potato. He went on to appear in Minnie’s Boys, The Rothschilds, and The Magic Show. In 1975, LuPone was nominated for a Tony Award for his portrayal of Zach in A Chorus Line. LuPone served as the director of the MFA drama program at the New School for Drama from 2005 through 2011 and was the president of the board of directors of A.R.T./New York. He is survived by his wife Virginia and son Orlando along with his sister Patti, and brother William.
