August Events Recap

In August, our partner organisation, Politics in Colour, held their most recent Candid Conversations event where we got to hear from some of NSW's most notable women of colour Councillors. They gave their insights on the value that women of colour and diverse voices bring to politics.

With NSW Council local government elections coming up in December, it was an insightful and thoroughly engaging discussion that expressed solidarity for shared struggles, as well as advice for other women interested in running for public office.

"We are challenged in many countless ways, but it does not stop us."
Clr Nadia Saleh, Canterbury-Bankstown Council

Many thanks to Kate Thwaites for being our August 'In Conversation' guest!

Elected as the Member for Jagajaga at the 2019 federal election for the ALP, Kate is a former ABC TV and Radio news reporter and has held senior roles at Oxfam and in the Victorian Public Service. She worked for Jenny Macklin to help deliver key reforms, including the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Paid Parental Leave.

Our August Masterclass focused on self-advocacy and confidence! Run by Kate Boorer and Fiona Pearman
Australia's leading experts on confidence and personal brand and the authors of Core Confidence

Their guidance helped attendees develop strategies to overcome the roadblocks and barriers that often prevent women from being their best advocate, and enhance self-confidence so that attendees could achieve their political ambitions.

Thank you Kate and Fiona!

Blogs and News!

WFEA is proud to have launched the 'Parliamentary Friends of Women for Election Australia' Group for the 47th Parliament of Australia!

We see this as an important step in our work to redress the gender imbalance in political representation in all tiers of government in Australia; from Councils to Canberra.

Curious to find out more? Click the images below to access the first interviews with two of our Co-Chairs, Senator Claire Chandler and Dr Anne Aly MP.

Petition EN3040 was recently accepting signatures, calling for amendments towards gender neutral terminology within the Australian Constitution.

Though submissions closed on the 1st of September, our latest blog post highlights the importance and necessity of such changes.

'Lift Women' Fundraising Project

Help us get there!

'Lift Women' is a new Australian crowd-funding platform focussed on women-led enterprises and WFEA was approached to add a project. Of course we said yes!

If we reach our 'Lift Women' goal, we can train approximately 180 women to run for public office which contributes to our ongoing "2000 by 2022" campaign. With the potential for each woman to benefit tens of thousands of people in her electorate, this project will help to inspire and equip more women to consider running for public office and make our Parliamentary chambers more representative.

SOLD OUT! - September EQUIP

Since our last email, we have completely exhausted all places for this month.
More evidence that women are mobilising in Australia!

But never fear, due to high demand we've launched our next EQUIP workshop for October. Every EQUIP event has sold out this year so we recommend registering ASAP! Further details below.

Our next free 'In Conversation' event is with Sharman Stone, a WFEA ambassador and a long-standing champion of gender equality and empowerment within Australian politics.

Sharman was the Liberal member for the federal electorate of Murray for 20 years. Though reflecting fondly on her career, Stone notes that she “experienced the challenges and consequences of a less than inclusive parliament. Women are not only underrepresented numerically, we fail to be found in equal numbers in the most powerful positions, shaping policy and allocating resources.”

WHEN: Wednesday 15 September, 1:00 - 2:00 pm AEST.
WHERE: Online via Zoom.
To hear more from Sharman, register for our free event here!

WHEN: Wednesday 29 September, 5:00 - 7:00 pm AEST.
WHERE: Online via Zoom.
