Note From The Editor:

Welcome to the very first issue of our Beyond Motherhood Newsletter. Wait, we are doing newsletters now? Well, Camille, my 4th grade daughter is working on a newsletter for her class, and she thinks it will be fun if I started one for Mother Honestly since I keep re-typing all of my IG post after I lose them, it seemed like a good idea. So, here we are! It's been a fantastic week with our "How To Create Success On Your Own Term" series. Hopefully you got a chance to read some of the thoughtful insights and are able to apply it to your own career, business and life.

In this issue, I want to address the topic of overwhelm. If you follow @motherhonestly closely, you will know that I shared this topic on instagram yesterday. I had also just returned from Asia, studied like crazy for my finals in Finance for my MBA class, while wrapping up our Early Bird campaign for Mother: The Summit. To say, I was firing all cylinders is an understatement. But, here is the kicker, I embraced it all. I have always welcomed my busy periods, because I thrive on getting things done, and when it all happens at the same time, I simply stay focused and execute.

So, what does it mean to embrace the overwhelm? It means, admitting that you are indeed burning out, that you have indeed bitten more than you can chew, that the mental overload is legit crazy and ultimately, that you can do something about it. As soon as you validate your new state of mind, you can then begin to open yourself up to possibilities. When I declared that I was indeed overwhelmed, so many of you sent me messages that absolutely lifted me up.

So, I want to encourage you to embrace your emotions, take a break if needed from the dishes, the pile of laundry, that soccer practice or the compelling need to make dinner. Ask for help and feel free to ask others in our community for advice or help on a topic. You will be surprised how quickly mamas are eager and waiting to help.

In this issue, I share three businesses that are near and dear to my heart, a few things I am reading, one of them will shock you, our bookclub of the quarter, and upcoming events in our community that are available to everyone, not just collective members.

xoxo,
Blessing

MH Weekly Picks

  1. Izzy Wheels is a Dublin based brand founded by Irish sisters Ailbhe (pronounced Alva) and Izzy Keane. The idea was inspired by Izzy who was born with Spina Bifida and is paralysed from her waist down. Ailbhe saw that her sister’s chair was the first thing people noticed about her but it wasn’t a reflection of her bright and bubbly personality.
  2. Rebel Nell began in 2013 with the mission to employ women facing barriers to employment in Detroit, educate them on financial management, life wellness and entrepreneurship, and empower them to transition to a life of independence.
  3. iFundWomen empowers women to start and grow better businesses. iFundWomen drives cash funding to women's businesses through a flexible crowdfunding platform with a pay-it-forward model, expert startup coaching, professional video production, access to pitch competitions with investors, and a private community for our entrepreneurs to collaborate.

#MHReads

  1. Every quarter, we pick a book to read, and our Collective meets to discuss it. This time, we are reading "You are a Badass at Making Money" and will be joined by a money expert on Nov 1, more news on that soonest! But can I implore you to join us whether or not you are part of the Collective? Please note that our Bookclub is open to everyone since it also serves as our "Open House" for potential new members. Feel free to RSVP for our next one coming up in November. As you read along, tag #MotherHonestly and #MHReads for a chance to be featured.
  2. I really enjoyed reading this article on Scary Mommy on the 10 reasons why every mom needs a Momcation. Who wants to come with me on something like this, I am happy to arrange over a glass of wine.
There are so many firsts attached to Tammy Duckworth—she’s the Senate’s first member to give birth while in office, its first member born in Thailand (to an American father and a Thai mother of Chinese descent), and, of course, its first female amputee. And major thanks to Collective member Erica Owens for always sending me amazing articles. Love ya Mama!

Swipe Up @ We Work

We had a great time at our Swipe Up Social event. It was indeed a wonderful evening downtown Detroit with amazing women from around the metro-Detroit area. One thing I learned is not to schedule a wonderful event like this around a religious holiday. I will keep that in mind for next time.

We learned so much about Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. I think in general we all vented about the algorithms and how that has impacted visibility and reach. Many thanks to our panelist - JeeYoung at Simply Every Blog, Peg Theobald at The Honest Mom and Liz Braga at The Modern Mere (not pictured below because sometimes you show up early and leave early to breastfeed and get ready for first day back to work after baby). Thanks Liz, you were golden!
