September 2018

In September the House returned for a brief period after recess and before breaking up again for the Conference season.

I took the opportunity to call for investment in our region in the forthcoming Budget - which will take place on Monday 29th October - and also spoke in a debate on deaf children's services, particularly highlighting the challenges facing deaf children in the north of the county.

I am Co-Chairman of the East of England All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) and we have put together a strong submission calling for infrastructure investment in the region and greater devolution to local authorities and LEPs.

The East of England is the UK’s jobs powerhouse. It is one of the country’s fastest growing regions, both in population and economy.

There has been significant investment in recent years, though there is a need to better recognise the region’s importance and untapped potential, including the fact that it is one of only three UK regions to contribute more in tax than it receives in public money.

The East of England is at the forefront of global excellence and innovation – and a frontrunner in attracting business.

Question to the Treasury

Beccles Southern Relief Road

I was delighted to attend the opening of the Beccles Southern Relief Road which should reduce congestion and the number of HGVs passing through the town centre.

This has been a long time coming and many people have been involved in progressing the need for this new road. I would like to thank all of them for helping make what once was a dream now a reality.

Third Crossing

Together with District Council leader Mark Bee, I welcomed County Council leader Matthew Hicks to Lowestoft to see for himself the various infrastructure projects underway in the town. Infrastructure is a vitally important component of bringing jobs to Lowestoft. This is about getting around Lowestoft better but it is also about connectivity to Lowestoft.

Deaf Children

I recently met with representatives from the National Deaf Children’s Society and a young deaf campaigner, Jovita, from Essex. We discussed issues affecting deaf children, including vital education funding and the gap in attainment between deaf children and their hearing peers throughout Waveney.

Earlier in the month I took part in a debate in Westminster Hall about the challenges facing deaf children in Suffolk.

Ministerial visit

I welcomed Minister of State for Employment, Alok Sharma MP, to the Jobs Fair at Lowestoft JobsCentre and we had a very constructive discussion with local DWP staff.

Conservative Party Conference 2018

I attended the Party Conference in Birmingham which was a great opportunity to meet many campaign groups and take part in a range of special interest debates at the fringe.
