Latest from Westminster...

June 2018

This is my latest update on the work I've been doing on your behalf in Westminster and in Waveney.

The Second Reading of my Private Member’s Bill - the Construction (Retention Deposit Schemes) Bill - has been put back to October unfortunately. If enacted the Bill will end payments being withheld for unreasonable lengths of time and end the risk of losing retentions via contractor bankruptcy.

On the plus side, the Bill now has the support of a quarter of all MPs. Together with the backing of the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) and British Chambers of Commerce, this means it has the support of over half a million businesses.

Locally, I have joined campaigners calling for a ban on electric pulse fishing, cut the ribbon on the new platform shelter at Beccles railway station, visited Gunton Primary School for the fete and, of course, enjoyed the Armed Forces Day event in Lowestoft.

Royal Navy Fisheries Protection

In Defence Questions this month, I asked the Secretary of State about funding for the Royal Navy for fisheries protection as it will be an important component of a sustainable post-Brexit UK fishing policy.

Air Displays

I also asked him to encourage the Civil Aviation Authority to take a proportionate approach to regulation and insurers to charge reasonable premiums to enable air displays to return to Armed Forces Day in Lowestoft.

Coastal Erosion

I made a speech in a debate in Westminster Hall in which I called for a national long-term, strategic, collaborative approach to coastal erosion so that we can move away from the current fragmented crisis management approach.

Rare Genetic Condition ‘PKU’

I made a speech on the rare genetic condition phenylketonuria (PKU) calling for better care and support to be provided by setting up specialised metabolic centres with an experienced metabolic physician and dietician. I specifically highlighted a case of a young Lowestoft boy and the difficulties facing him and his family.

Transam Trucking breakthrough

I very much welcome the Government amendment to the Haulage Permits and Trailer Registration Bill to address concerns raised by specialist UK hauliers in the music industry, Transam Trucking, about the availability of international haulage permits post-Brexit.

I made a speech on this in a debate on the Bill.

Suffolk Day Event in Parliament

I was delighted to welcome Local Government Minister Rishi Sunak MP to our Suffolk Day event in Westminster where local exhibitors included: Feedback Mental Health, St. Peter’s Brewery, Fen Farm Dairy and Pathways Care Home.

Suffolk has much to offer and I was very pleased to welcome Local Government Minister Rishi Sunak MP to our Suffolk Day event. Suffolk is a unique place with wonderful market towns interspersed with wonderful countryside. We put food and drink on peoples' dinner tables all around the country.

Suffolk is a wonderful place to live and work and it is a special privilege to represent part of the county in Parliament.
