TEXSAR - In the Community - December 2019
A Note From the CEO

Friends of TEXSAR,
In 2019, TEXSAR continued to be a critical resource for the first responder community in the State of Texas, providing specialized, life-saving search and rescue capabilities to requesting agencies across all 254 counties. In 2019, TEXSAR received over 70 agency requests for TEXSAR’s services, including missing persons cases, cold case support, community event support, force multiplier, and flood and swiftwater support. This equates to a callout every 5.5 days, a very impressive number and a great show of confidence from our law enforcement, fire services and emergency management partners.

As TEXSAR continues to grow and expand, with over 400 members and over a half million dollars worth of assets, it is now more critical than ever that we have a steady hand on the helm to lead TEXSAR to the next level at providing an amazing member experience and the highest quality of product for our customers. We are excited to have Justin McInnis as the President of TEXSAR and look forward to working with Justin as we move into the next chapter for Texas Search and Rescue. Justin will assume the full-time, paid role of President the first week in January, 2020.

As part of our core values, we believe that fiscal responsibility and respect for our donor’s dollar is paramount. We are very proud to be a Platinum Level Designation on GuideStar (https://www.guidestar.org/profile/84-1644603) and are recognized by GreatNonprofits as a Top-Rated Nonprofit (https://greatnonprofits.org/org/texsar-texas-search-and-rescue) for our fiscal and operational transparency.

Thank you for your continued support of Texas Search and Rescue, we are honored and blessed with amazing team members who are willing to risk it all to take care of their fellow Texan. I am very proud of each and every one of them and honored to work beside them. 2020 will be an exciting year of growth and development and we are excited about the new leadership that Justin McInnis will bring to the organization and ultimately our members and requesting agencies. Thank you for your continued support of TEXSAR, especially in this year of transition and dynamic growth. We are excited to enter this next chapter of Texans Helping Texans.
Sincerely,

Justen Noakes

Supporter of the Quarter
Congratulations to the our Q4 Supporters, Patti and Randi Riggs. Early in 2019, The Riggs Family expressed interest in exploring additional ways they could increase donations and support for TEXSAR.

They worked side-by-side with staff  and longtime member, Allen Robinson to create a model event that truly set the bar for success. The first of several 'House Party' Fundraisers, Patti and Randy hosted friends and family in their home to learn more about and raise over $5,000 in support for TEXSAR. Through their event, we were able to book an additional house party and increase interest for future event hosts.

Allen Robinson volunteered to share his story as a Hollywood stunt man along with his involvement with Texas Search and Rescue.

Thank you, Patti and Randy, for all of your contributions! The value you guys have brought to TEXSAR through your efforts has been over $11,500 in 2019!
Member Spotlight
It's inevitable after joining TEXSAR that one's service and experiences impact their life in a number of ways. For many TEXSAR Members TEXSAR has been pivotal in their journey through life. For Ken Jamilosa, his experience with TEXSAR has completely changed the trajectory of his career path. He is a dedicated TEXSAR member that so many look up to and it's even more exciting to see him grow in his current role with Galveston County. Keep up the hard work Ken!

How long have you been with TEXSAR?
4.5 years. I joined a couple of weeks before the Memorial Day Floods of 2015. My first deployment was less than a week after joining, then jumped right into the flood deployment.

What was your job when you first joined TEXSAR?
I was a software consultant based out of Seattle, WA.

What is your job currently?
Homeland Security Planner for Galveston County, Office of Emergency Management

What about TEXSAR led you to your current position? Or Who?
Laura (Norman) was very encouraging and thought I would excel and be a great fit for this position. It put the bug in my ear that I couldn't get rid of and eventually applied for the job.
When I first joined TEXSAR, I was heavily involved in everything (deployments, training, ICS classes, etc.). At the time, I guess I didn't realize that I was creating/bulking up a resume in a new field of work. It was all just so interesting and fun to me, that I just kept chomping at the bit for knowledge and experience. When the job opportunity presented itself, I felt like I was in a pretty good spot.

What do you enjoy about your current position and your work with TEXSAR?
At first, I thought TEXSAR was just a fun thing to do, but after getting really involved, the "want" to help others and serve the community really grew within me. Serving alongside other people that have the same desire and passion is very motivating and inspiring as well. This carries over into my current position where I've been given the ability to help the community prepare for different situations that may happen in and around our area.
