The Quaker History of Eastern State Penitentiary

Next week, Arch Street Meeting House will be hosting Matt Murphy from Eastern State Penitentiary for an evening program! Matt's presentation will discuss the many connections between Quakers and Eastern State Penitentiary.

Matt Murphy has served as the Tour Programs Supervisor at Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site since 2015. Matt is responsible for creating major programming and oversees the hiring, training, and evaluation of the education staff. Matt is a seasoned expert in facilitative dialogue methodology. From Alcatraz Island to Independence National Historical Park, Matt has served as a cultural heritage interpreter at sites across the nation and has appeared on popular media outlets such as the Washington Post and the Travel Channel.

Philadelphia celebrates International Day of Monuments and Sites on Monday, April 18th, but Arch Street Meeting House will be observing the celebration on April 16th & 17th. ASMH is closed to the public on Mondays.
 
The International Day of Monuments and Sites is celebrated internationally on April 18th to recognize the cultural significance of important landmarks and sites of observance. Philadelphia is home to 67 national historic landmarks.

New Outdoor Exhibits to be Unveiled This Spring

 

Friday, May 27th, 5pm - 8pm

Join us at Arch Street Meeting House on Friday, May 27th as we celebrate the installation of our brand new outdoor exhibits! We're inviting our visitors and supporters to explore the new installations, enjoy complimentary refreshments, and Meet Quaker History.

A night for the whole family, attendees can engage with new stories in our exhibits while meeting Lucretia Mott, Francis Watkins Harper, and Samuel Nicholas.
