The Ten Commitments And Other Confusing Secular Concepts

Saturday, January 11, 2020  1 PM

Heatherdowns Branch Library 3265 Glanzman Rd, Toledo, OH 43614

In the fall, the American Humanist Association (AHA) formally introduced "The Ten Commitments" has a means to teach some valuable humanist values.

Kristin Wintermute, from the AHA Center for Education, wrote:

"Whereas the Ten Commandments of the Hebrew Bible are a set of strict rules dictated by God, the Ten Commitments stand on their own as humanist values to maintain and strive to practice daily. They propose we put our values into action to work towards positively impacting our communities and society. In their simplicity, the Ten Commitments ultimately define what we are about and what we stand for. I also see the Ten Commitments as an avenue for collaboration—a gathering point for all humanists to work together."

SHoWLE President Douglas Berger will moderate a group discussion about the Ten Commitments and other concepts that seem to borrow from the religious. We will try to find out if these concepts work in getting the Humanist message out or just muddies the water.

For more information about the Ten Commitments check out the September/October issue of The Humanist magazine or the following link:

Board News

At the SHoWLE Board of Directors meeting in November, it was decided to meet in person quarterly and to communicate at other times virtually using an internet application.

SHoWLE President Douglas Berger suggested the change since the Board doesn't need to hold as many formal votes that would justify meeting in person.

"Since most or our meetings have just been me explaining what has been done as part of my duties as President and with a budget being set, it will be easier and less time consuming to meet in person on a quarterly basis. Besides we see each other at least at one event or general meeting and I can always pull an in-person meeting together should something come up needing a vote," Berger said.

The Board will still work to be as transparent as possible by posting treasury summaries each month and minutes to prior Board meetings. Members can always ask a Board member a question and they will be happy to answer it as soon as possible.

"Voting members can call the group phone number and speak to me directly," Berger said. "Or you can leave a message and I will get back to you inside 24 hours."

The quarterly meetings will be reviewed later this year to see if the change helped or hurt the operation of the group.

Winter Weather Reminder

As the temperature drops and we start to have snow storms this winter, here is a reminder:

SHoWLE is subject to the rules and regulations of the venues where we have events and meetings. For example the Toledo Public Library closes their branches during a Level 3 weather alert. If a venue closes due to the weather (or other non-scheduled issue) then consider any SHoWLE meeting or event scheduled at that venue on that date to be cancelled. Most likely the cancelled event or meeting won't be rescheduled.

We will try to send out notices as we know of any closings. You can find updated information on our website and our social media profiles.
