Hello Members and Friends!

The Governor of Ohio has extended orders against gathering in groups at least until the end of May. Since we usually don't meet in July and August, we have decided to suspend in-person meetings until at least September. Hopefully by then we can meet in groups more than 10 and we are able to make the gatherings as safe as possible. In the meantime we will be meeting online (see details below).

Lucky for us (or unlucky depending on your outlook) we don't have many fixed costs to keeping the group going. I know some people are struggling more than we are but if you are able please donate to the group to help offset some of our expenses so we can keep things like the Meetup group going.

We will continue to share accurate information as often as we can on social media channels and if members and friends need assistance (like you've lost a job or have to deal with family members being ill) check out our Community Outreach Resources and Education page.

https://is.gd/showlehelp

If you need assistance in navigating the public assistance channels due to a job loss because of pandemic closures, send a message to me or Shawn and we can use our personal experiences to help you.

Shawn has also offered to do pick-ups for things like groceries or prescriptions if you don't feel like you can safely pick them up yourself. Just give me a call at the group number 567-302-0209 or send us an email.

We Have A Podcast

In this longer than usual episode Doug talks with Nick Little, Vice President and General Counsel of the Center for Inquiry, about his group's effort to force big retailers to be honest about homeopathy products they sell. They discuss the group's current work to allow secular celebrants to solemnize marriages in all the states. Finally they look at the current status of church and state litigation in the time of Trump. It isn't good.

You can find the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google PodcastsSpotify, and Stitcher as well as some smaller podcast apps that pull info from the major directories.

Homeopathy products are concoctions that are sold next to actual over the counter medicine in many big retailers like Walmart and CVS. You have a child with the flu so you go to the local CVS and see a product next to the name brand that will say it is natural or organic or gluten free and parents will buy thinking it is the same thing as the name brand. Those homeopathy products are not the same and in some cases can actually be dangerous not only for kids but all of us. The Center for Inquiry filed lawsuits against WalMart and CVS to get the retailers to market the products separately from the name brand and tested medicines and to be honest about what these products do.

Nick and Doug also discuss the current work to allow secular celebrants to solemnize marriages in all the states.

In many states in the country secular people who want to solemnize marriages still have to be certified by a religious group even if that group isn't religious in a super natural way. CFI thinks it is an insult to secular people to make us lie about being religious.

Finally we look at the current status of church and state litigation in the time of Trump. Elections do matter and secular people will be on the losing end of many cases in the near future.

If there is a particular topic or speaker you would like to see at a future meeting or have an idea for a group activity then please send us a note by email or fill out our contact form

It would help if you provided as much information as possible about the idea - like who to contact or websites to visit.

There is no guarantee SHoWLE will turn your idea into an actual meeting or event but the odds increase if you are willing to host the event and/or do a lot of the leg work.

Activities and meetings for SHoWLE depend entirely on volunteer effort.
