A Message From our President

Welcome back to those who attended the 2019 Sierra Nevada Region Conference in Reno. Not only did we get some important business done, hear from inspiring speakers and awardees, receive multiple recognitions for our hard work within the club, (yay us!) we also had quality time just being together and having fun. We come back inspired! I’m already looking forward to the Soroptimist Development Retreat in July. It would be the ultimate if we had record breaking attendance from our club for this event. Seriously think about it, everyone. It’s well worth your time.

We have so much going on in the next two months. Don’t blink – It’ll all be over way too quick. We have our TBar take over this Thursday May 2nd, the parade this Saturday May 4th, the new member mixer on May 14th and final discussion for planning our 24th annual Microbrewfest at our meeting on May 28th. While your email inbox may be inundated with information and correspondence from committee chairs on all these events, please open, read and respond if necessary. We don’t want anyone left out of the fun.

I hope everyone has a happy May Day!

With admiration for our amazing club members,

Angie Little

Thank you to all who participated in our membership survey. The results are very interesting. I think each club can take a look at it and see how it applies to your club. Then you can take steps for improvement from there. A big thing is, that it is getting us talking and this is always good. Please let me know if I can be of assistance in any way.

– Trudy

Meet Judi Merlo!
I am the oldest daughter from a family of six children.  I have two sisters and three brothers.  My mother worked as a homemaker, and my father worked as an engineer.  Because my father was sometimes transferred for his work, I was born in Kentucky, raised mostly in Ohio, and moved to The East Bay in California where I finished high school.  Coming to Chico to attend Chico State set the course for the rest of my life.  It is hard to take the Midwest out of the girl, which is why I identified with Chico's more rural lifestyle so much.  I have considered Chico my home for over fifty years now.

I was married for several years but after that ended, I decided to stay in Chico to raise my daughter Angela, who was three years old at the time and the light of my life.  Between raising her and working, life was quite busy and very full for many years.  When my daughter was in junior high school, I decided to start taking classes at CSUC as well, in order to finish my degree in Business/Accounting.   I graduated from CSUC before my daughter did, but it was close.  I have a wonderful son-in-law named Dennis.  I also have two precious grandchildren, a grandson named Keagan who is almost fifteen, and a granddaughter named Gianna who just turned thirteen.  I spend a lot of time with them all, especially during the slower pace of summer when we have more time to hang out together or enjoy activities like swimming.

I have worked in Chico for over forty years, first as a bookkeeper and later as an accountant.  I have always loved math, so the profession turned out to be a great fit.  I have worked in those capacities for a bank, a farm equipment company, an accounting firm, a staffing company, and an eye center.  Recently I have been working as a substitute in different office capacities for Chico Unified School District.

I have not yet traveled outside of the United States, but I have traveled to or through most of the states.  One of my favorite places is the Colorado Rocky Mountains, where my family spent many vacations at my grandparents' log home in the mountains.  Another favorite place of mine is Maui.  I would love to travel to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and Europe in general.

Being a Soroptimist has been extremely fulfilling for over twenty-five years now.  Individually it is difficult to make the difference I would like to, but collectively we are able to make that difference.  I greatly value my friends, my family, and my faith.  I feel very blessed.
