Improving water use
efficiency at irrigation
systems using advanced Remote Sensing Technology.

After a successful kick-off in Xinavane in March, the IWACA-TECH project has been launched officially and started building its new products. In this quarterly newsletter we want to update you on the progress and continuation of the IWACA-TECH project.

We will have a follow-up seminar on the 19th and 20th of July 2018.

A glimpse of VanderSat's evaporation product

With the help of optical satellite imagery we were able to compute a concept version of an evaporation product with 20m resolution. This will be the first building block for the project.
Coming months we will further develop the concept evaporation product. The product will tell us where irrigation is needed and how efficient irrigation has been applied.

Field visit 14th of May

Prof. Pieter Van der Zaag (IHE Delft), Omar Khan (EMU & Mobile Water Management), Jonas Massigue (Mobile Water Management), and Jeremias Pene (EMU) will visit Xinavane on the 14th of May. The coming weeks there will be more frequent visits by Omar to assist documentation of the hydraulic structures in the project area.

Project status update

The IWACA-TECH project just is half way Quarter 2. So what activities can we expect in quarter 2?

Upcoming activities:
  • Database complete (2012-2017)
Yield, hydraulic dimensions, irrigation information, meteorological data will be gathered for the project site.

  • A second seminar in Xinavane
Preliminary results will be discussed and new steps will be outlined.

Completed activities:
  • Kick-off in Xinavane (15 & 16 March)
In March the project team and partners came together for a two-day seminar. It was a successful introduction for both sides.

  • Fieldwork (19-30 March)
The two weeks after the kick-off a fieldwork was conducted where a project site was chosen and data gathered.

  • A first concept of an evaporation product
The first building block to optimize irrigation.
