PenFed's Generosity Makes a Big Impact

We are so grateful to PenFed Credit Union’s Eugene Service Center for its amazing donation of $10,000 to help kids in crisis. It's part of $20,000 PenFed donated to local charities this year - charities picked by employees, whose support of BOL through the years has included holding donation drives and volunteering in the warehouse.

Over the past two years, requests for our bags have increased by 34%, and these funds will allow us to reach even more children in need. Thank you, PenFed!
Shave Ice, Super Heroes, and School Supplies
It's hard to think about back-to-school when the temperatures are in the 90s, but the school year starts early at Bags of Love, where our August backpack distribution reaches hundreds of kids each year. So the timing was perfect in July when SweetBay Shave Ice owner Kelly Prusz teamed up with our friend Ryan May and other Portland Superheroes Coalition members to raise funds and gather school supplies for BOL.

Superheroes like Captain America and Wonder Woman greeted kids, who could order superhero-themed shave ice and get their pictures taken in the Reflections Event Entertainment photo booth. Sluggo, the Eugene Emeralds mascot, even made a special appearance.

The event at the SweetBay food truck in the Wesley United Methodist Church parking lot brought in more than 200 pounds of much-needed supplies, including some really cute backpacks for our August backpack-and-school-supply distribution. In addition, SweetBay donated ten percent of its proceeds. The afternoon was so successful that SweetBay asked to keep the Bags of Love donation barrel through August 23. Their goal is to collect a whopping 500 pounds by the end of the summer! You can drop off donations and satisfy your sweet tooth at 1385 Oakway Rd.

Thank you to BOL volunteer Randy Purdy for covering the event. Photos above courtesy of SweetBay Shave Ice and the Eugene Emeralds.
Garage Sale for a Cause
Donna Leavitt and Gloria Buchanan holding a donated quilt in May 2021
Who doesn’t love a good garage sale - especially when it’s supporting BOL?  Warehouse volunteer Gloria Buchanan recently coordinated a garage sale at her home and raised over $1,800 for Bags of Love. Fellow volunteers Marilyn Koenig and Donna Leavitt also pitched in to make the event a success. Thank you to Gloria, Marilyn, and Donna for turning spring (or summer) cleaning into a benefit for kids in crisis.
School Supply Stock-Up
There's no time like August to get school supplies at rock-bottom prices. Each August, we do our best to take advantage of back-to-school sales and fill our warehouse with a year’s worth of notebooks, scissors, colored pencils, and more. Though we already have a good supply of pens and pencils, we can use help with other items. If you're looking to make a donation, consider picking up some of the following when you're at stores like Walmart, Fred Meyer, or Target.
  • Crayola-brand crayons (best price: 50 cents/box)
  • Colored markers and pencils, 10-12 count (75 cents/box or less)
  • Spiral notebooks, college and widerule (25 cents or less)
  • Loose-leaf notebook paper, college and wide rule (80 cents or less)
  • School scissors - sharp and blunt tips
Coming Up: Auction 2021
The 2021 Bags of Love Dinner and Auction is scheduled for October 28, and we can't wait to see all of you! Our sponsor spots are filling up quickly, but we still have a few opportunities for Title, Event, and Table Sponsors. Individual tickets are also available for $100 each. Please contact our office at 541-357-4957 or if you would like to join us for an evening to support children in crisis.
Volunteer of the Month
This month's standout volunteer is super-shopper Lynne Palmer. From pajamas to underclothes to toys, Lynne manages to find the best sales and clearance options for many of our most-needed items.
Besides school supplies, the items we need most right now are:
  • Men's socks (we really need these!)
  • Cotton fabric in kid-friendly prints and colors
  • Summer-weight pajamas in all sizes
