2) Diversion Spotlight: The Judge Ed Emmett Mental Health Diversion Center

The Judge Ed Emmett Mental Health Diversion Center offers a pre-charge alternative for law enforcement in Harris County, Texas to drop off people with mental illness who are picked up for low level misdemeanors (non-violent crimes). This is an expansion of services from The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD based out of Houston.

Program participants receive services through an integrated treatment plan on site, and an extensive discharge plan post release to coordinate supports geared towards rehabilitation.

Check out the program’s flyer here and read what participants have to say about their experiences- a great example of how you can share your program's success stories!

3) Save the Date: December 11th NASW webinar on the connection between law enforcement, social work, and deflection

On December 11th, attend a webinar hosted by National Association of Social Workers and presented by PTACC co-founder, Jac Charlier, titled "Law Enforcement, Social Work and Deflection: Working Together to Help People Avoid Arrest and Jail, and Instead Access Treatment and Services."

Joining Jac on the webinar are Ricki Pribyl, MSW, LICSW from Blue Earth County, Minnesota’s Yellow Line Project, and Kurt August, MSW, from Philadelphia’s Police-Assisted Diversion Program.

The webinar is free to NASW Specialty Practice Section members and includes 1.5 CEUs for social workers!

About the Webinar

This webinar will provide a national overview and introduction to the newly emerging field of deflection and pre-arrest diversion, which sits at the intersection of law enforcement, behavioral health, and community. As the field grows, the demand for social workers, clinical staff, peers, and people in recovery, to do this work is expected to grow. Harkening back to the days of police and social workers working in the 1970's side-by-side on the streets, deflection is similarly developing now in response to the opioid epidemic, police encounters with people with mental illness, the high rate of U.S. incarceration, and the need to change the narrative on community-police relations.
December 11, 2019 from 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM EST
