PTACC Partners in the Spotlight
Webinar: Credible Messengers: Violence Prevention and COVID-19
Law Enforcement Action Partnership, May 20th at 12pm ET
Director Clinton Lacey of the DC Department of Youth Rehabilitative Services (DYRS) and former Latin Kings leader Antonio Fernandez will explain how DC and New York are preventing violence with Credible Messengers. The Credible Messengers model matches justice-involved people with mentors who grew up in a similar neighborhood, were involved in violence and other criminal offenses, and have since transformed their lives. The mentors are trained in cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma awareness, and restorative justice principles.

On the webinar, Director Lacey and Credible Messenger Antonio Fernandez will describe the scope of offenses covered by the diversion program and give examples of life-changing connections. As COVID-19 creates an urgent need for decarceration, Credible Messengers demonstrate an effective community-based alternative. The results of Credible Messengers have been shown by an Urban Institute study, which found an over 50 percent decrease in 2-year recidivism. The webinar will be held Wednesday, May 20 at 12pm ET/9 am PT. Access instructions are below:

COVID-19 Impact on Children & Families
Foster care challenges during COVID-19
ABC 20, 5/13/20

Foster children often face challenges of uncertainty even in the best of times, but COVID-19 adds yet another obstacle. The pandemic and Stay-at-Home order are separating foster children from common child abuse reporters such as teachers and friends, while also putting a pause on potential new home placements. Courts are shut down which also leaves many children and their parents' cases in limbo. Shelley Husemann, director of child welfare at Lutheran Child and Family Services, says proper resources are critical to getting foster children in a safe environment. “The birth parents are struggling significantly in getting services done, the clinical services, the domestic violence services, substance abuse those types of things that are required for their children to return home to them," said Shelley Husemann, director of child welfare at Lutheran Child and Family Services.

NPR, 5/14/20

The United Nations is warning that the coronavirus presents another menace that health officials must not overlook. Secretary-General António Guterres said in a video message launching a mental health policy brief this week.
