1) Resource: COSSAP Webinar- Overview of the Field and Primer for Implementation

The Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Abuse Program (COSSAP) hosted the webinar, First Responder-Led Diversion and Outreach: An Overview of the Field and Primer for Implementation, a virtual learning opportunity provided by PTACC National Partner, Center for Health and Justice at TASC. The webinar recording is available online and the associated PowerPoint is accessible here.
 

    

Center for Health and Justice at TASC and a variety of other providers offer technical assistance to jurisdictions implementing law enforcement- led diversion programs and first responder-led response initiatives through the COSSAP grant.
  • Tailored Assistance—The COSSAP training and technical assistance (TTA) program offers a variety of learning opportunities and assistance to support BJA COSSAP grantees as well as local, tribal, and state organizations, stakeholders, and projects in building and sustaining multidisciplinary responses to the nation’s substance abuse crisis.  You do not need to be a COSSAP grantee to receive assistance.  TTAs are provided in a variety of formats, including virtual and in-person training events, workshop and meeting presentations, and online resources.  Request TTA to support your activities at https://cossapresources.org/Program/TTA/Request.

2) Funding Opportunity : ICJIA Grants- Law Enforcement Responses to Drugs

The Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA) is requesting proposals for grants to support comprehensive law enforcement responses to drugs. Grants will be made with FFY17 and FFY18 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funds. A total of $3.5 million in funding is available to support the JAG goal of reducing substance misuse and availability in Illinois communities.

3) Article: Importance and Implications of Deflection during COVID-19

The PTACC National Partner the National Association of Social Workers article, "Flipping the Script on Law Enforcement Encounters," discusses the opportunity deflection provides for law enforcement. Deflection adds a third option to typical law enforcement responses, to arrest, to take no action, or to deflect. 
 

 
"It's about flipping the script on first encounters so it is supportive of people with services'... Social workers who volunteer who volunteer their time with the deflection model can provide clinical interbentions or case management services."
