CELEBRATION IN HONOR OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA AND PROCESSION
The Virgin Mary appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. She appeared one time each month starting on May 13 and ending on October 13. The three children were named Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta. During her apparitions, Our Lady gave them messages for mankind and secrets about the future.

To honor and celebrate this special event in the life of the Church, the Portuguese-Canadian Community in the City of Prince George has requested that the Mass on the Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, October 16, 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Cathedral be a celebration that includes a special devotion to Our Lady. And so, following the 11:00 AM Mass this coming Sunday, there will be a procession of the image of Our Lady within the Church and school grounds.

In preparation, we are looking for three children, ages 8-10 (one boy and two girls) to dress-up like the three shepherd children (Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta). The costumes will be provided. If your child is interested to do this role, please coordinate with Fr. Rector by contacting the parish office.

We are also in need of men who will volunteer to carry the image of Our Lady during the procession. If you think you can do the task of carrying the image of Our Lady, please have your name on the list by contacting the parish office. Attention all men in the parish to really consider being part of this.

MONTH OF THE ROSARY
October is designated by the Catholic Church as the "Month of the Rosary" because in this month the Church celebrates the Marian advocation of "Our Lady of the Rosary" on October 7.

You are welcome to join Fr. Rector as he leads us in praying the holy rosary every day from the Cathedral. It will be livestream via our Facebook page and broadcast via FM Radio 102.5. The mysteries of the holy rosary are prayed in different languages English, Latin, Portuguese, Italian and Filipino.
LIVING ROSARY WITH FATHER RECTOR & SACRED HEART SCHOOL
On Friday, October 28, 8:15 AM Father Rector and Sacred Heart School staff and learners will pray the rosary together with each student and staff serving as a bead of the rosary. Depending upon the weather that day, we plan to do it outside the school gym. Parents of the students and parishioners are welcome to join us.

WORLD FOOD DAY
A World Food Day has been promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization since 1981. The Church is concerned about the issue of hunger in the world, remembering the words of the Son of Man on the last judgment of the nations, "...I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink..." (Mt 25.35)

BLESSING OF PETS
On October 4, the Church celebrated the Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Ecology. Traditionally on his feast day, blessing of the animals is observe. Since Father Rector was with the priests of the diocese at that time for the Priests' Convocation, he was not able to do the blessing of pets on October 4.

Some parents and children made the request for it. In response to that request, we will have blessing of the animals on Tuesday, October 25 directly after school in the
playground.

We invite the school families to take their pets to school when they come to pick up their children in the afternoon. Due to allergies, we cannot have the pets at school during the day. Those with allergies can leave immediately after school. Please note, that dogs must be leashed or in an animal carrier. Similarly, cats and other small animals (rabbits, hamsters, etc.) will need to be contained. Sadly, snakes are not allowed. If need be, Fr. Rector will have a separate blessing of your pet if it happens to be a snake. Miss Nuala Power and Mr. Leo Durau from Sacred Heart School are coordinating this event.

READERS, ALTAR SERVERS AND CHOIR
Please see schedule above. If you are not available on the date and time you are assigned, please let Fr. Rector know ahead of time.

OFFERTORY PROCESSION
As announced last Sunday at Mass, individual parishioners and/or families are invited to sign-up their names to bring forward the gifts of bread, wine and the monetary offering during the Procession of the Gifts at Mass.

We encourage the participation of everyone who comes and attends Sunday Mass at the Cathedral. Please choose a particular Sunday and/or Mass time that you and your family want to bring forward the gifts. Sign-up sheet is in the foyer.

VISIT TO THE HOMEBOUND
Fr. Rector tries his best to regularly visit Catholic residents of Fort George Manor (Thursday) and Simon Fraser Lodge (Friday). If you have family members that you want Fr. Rector to visit, please inform him by calling the parish office.  During the visit, Fr. Rector celebrates Liturgy of the Word with Communion. At the request of the residents, he also listens to their confessions and of course, if needed, the Anointing of the Sick.

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FOLLOWING PARISH GATHERING:

Last week, a team from C.I.S. visited our school in preparation for an External Ministry Visit which is planned for this coming school year. The team consisted of Superintendent, Mr. Chris Dugdale, Mrs. Frances Roch (Principal of Learning) and Mrs. Colleen Richard (Principal of Notre Dame, Dawson Creek). It was a pleasure to have some time to share our visions and hopes for our school as we go forward together.

Last week, we welcomed Mrs. Amy Van Delft to Sacred Heart. Mrs. Van Delft has taken over the Grade 2/3 classroom. Sincere thanks to Mr. Durau and Mrs. Brummund for their great work since the start of the school year. We wish Mrs. Van Delft every blessing and success as she joins our team.

The Kindergarten class visited the Public Library on October 14. They enjoyed an interactive story-time followed by a tour of the children’s collection and a visit upstairs to view the range of resources available there. The Public Library is a wonderful asset to our families where they can access a huge variety of (free) books which support reading development.

Sacred Heart School has had an ongoing relationship with the REAPS organization. Roanne from REAPS will deliver red wiggler composting worms to the school on October 17. These worms will consume organic waste (e.g., apple/orange/banana peels, muffin papers). They turn this organic matter into compost which is used in the school raised beds.

The staff and students at Sacred Heart School will participate in an Earthquake Drill on October 19. Given our recent earth-shaking experience in P.G. it is an important reminder for us all to be properly prepared.

On October 20, Ms. Ruddy and the Grade 1/2 students will mark the Feast of Mary Most Admirable, their classroom patron saint.

Our families are visiting the school on a daily basis for updates on student progress during these weeks. It is lovely to meet all the families and share the good news with them. Thank you for taking the time to visit.

The CWL Bazaar is planned for October 22/23. This will take place at S.H.S. Gym and is a wonderful opportunity to support small local businesses and enjoy snacks or lunch.
