CHRISTMAS
The Christmas Season celebrates the birth of the Lord Jesus and the ways he manifested the presence of God among us.  For the Church, only the Easter celebration of the Lord's death and rising is more important than Christmas Season. (See General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, 1969, no. 32)
“He is our peace, Who has made us both one…for through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father” (Ephesians 2:14, 18). Saint Paul’s words remind us that the source of peace is the One Whose birth we celebrate at Christmas.

The last year has occasioned fear, anxiety and division, as people have navigated the world of the global pandemic. The changing forms of the virus and health authorities’ responses have raised questions that elicited different and even contradictory answers. The internet is filled with information and opinion that has often been a source of division, not reassurance. While everyone is responsible to exercise his own judgement, the unfortunate reality is that some have been attacked or belittled for holding views that differ from others. Saint Paul’s words direct us to Him Whose cross has given us the way to handle differences with respect, patience and charity (cf. 1 John 4:8).

As we celebrate the birth of Him Who is our peace, we want to live our relationships after the pattern of Christ. The stress of the pandemic can be an opportunity for grace, an invitation to imitate more completely the Lord Who is our peace and gave His life that we might be one.

With prayerful best wishes for a faith-filled celebration of Christmas!

—Bishop Stephen Jensen
