Care to Dance Was a Hit!

For those who missed it, our annual recital, Care to Dance, took place on Cinco de Mayo this year! We had such a good time. Keep an eye out on our blog; an update with lots of photos coming soon. To tide you over until then, check out some of the highlights, below!
A HUGE thank you goes out to everyone who participated in Care to Dance! We couldn't have done it without each and every one of you. It is truly an honor to work with these children and to have an opportunity to see them shine on stage is such a huge part of why we do this. Thank you!

Summer Camp!
A Note From Our Director
Well, the rush of the Spring semester is over. Classes concluded with in-school performances for all of our Leap of Joy kids. It was great for me to go watch their final shows. My really favorite part of this job is that I get to go to schools and see and meet some of the kids and feel the love of the younger ones when they come to give me a hug. All the begging for money, all the hours of writing grants and correspondence and meetings are worth those hugs. And then seeing them in Care to Dance and the pride and joy of their families makes me know that the 3rd of my life is meaningful in so many ways. Bringing performance art to the kids who have nothing, gives them joy and hope and a confidence that is life changing. I also am so incredibly impressed with our talented instructors and what they are accomplishing.

Our big Spring Care to Dance Cinco de Mayo performance celebration went so smoothly under Clay Moore, with Andrea Ariel and all of our wonderful staff, volunteers, and board members. We were disappointed when the volunteers we expected from the Junior League didn’t come, but everything went smoothly.

The next big thing is our summer camp on July 15 at The High Road. This is the 4th time we’ve had camp there and it works out so well. Our kids have a really great time and by the end of the week on Friday, they perform for their family and friends, all of the dances and acting they create during the week. The instructors are the best of Austin, teaching hip hop, jazz, ballet/creative movement and improv creation
and performance. The kids all create their own costumes from a myriad of costume pieces and accessories and there’s no time for boredom.

Some of our kids will be back for the forth year and many from last year will be returning, so if you have a child you think would do well, don’t hesitate to sign them up. Full and partial scholarships are available on a need basis. We provide snacks for the kids, but ask them to bring a sack lunch and water bottle. On Friday, we play in the pool in the morning, have a pizza party at lunch, do final rehearsals and
then their recital.

Our next goal, and one I’ve wanted to do for the last few years, is to expand our presence in Austin pre-K Title 1 schools. We had a very successful experience at Dawson Elementary, with LOJ Instructor Nina Shaw this semester and hope to duplicate in other Austin schools in the future.

Stay tuned. We have some fun fundraising events coming up.
Coming Soon: Eclectic Night at Il Brutto!
We're very pleased to announce our next fundraiser, Eclectic Night at Il Brutto! Happening on July 10th, we will be putting on a show for the diners at the amazing Il Brutto restaurant on 6th!

More details to come!
