Renewable accounted for 43% of the generation mix in 2019, and 51% this week.

Global SEN Operation

The overall generation mix remained in a Summer configuration. The year began with stored water levels significantly lower than last year.

Prices in Alto Jahuel were 2% higher than last week but 36% lower compared to one year ago.

Demand went on decreasing (-2.21%) due to end-of-year holidays.

Thermal generation accounted for 49% of the mix (-2 pp from last week).

Hydro share (dam and run-of-river) increased 2.7 pp, replacing mostly wind, coal and gas which shares decreased respectively by 1.5 pp, 1 pp and 0.5 pp.

It is worth noticing that Santa María coal power plant went off on Saturday morning: as a consequence, there was no coal generation in the South during the weekend.

Prices increased from Alto Jahuel to the North and slightly decreased on Charrúa and Puerto Montt regions.

Marginal costs were mostly coupled this week, but some congestions appeared on Pan de Azúcar – Maitencillo 500 kV on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, and on Punta Colorada – Pan de Azúcar 220 kV on Friday afternoon. This led to slight decouplings.

On Wednesday, the new ancillary services regime started operation.

Wind & Solar production

2019 closed with a 19.26% yearly share of non-conventional renewable (biogas, wind, solar, geothermal and run-of-river) in the generation mix. Considering dams, renewable accounted for more than 43% of the generation mix in 2019.

Solar generation started 2020 with a 1% increase, reaching 159 GWh. Sunday had the lowest generation due to a cloudy weather in several parts of the country.

Wind generation went on decreasing and reached only 89 GWh (-22%). This was due to a lower wind plant factor in Pan de Azúcar zone (12.3% vs 32.4%), which was not compensated by the wind plant factor increase in Charrúa zone (52.4% vs 36.2%).

Curtailment rate was low this week and reached a total of 0.4% (0% for wind and 0.6% for solar). It was due to the usual congestions in Paposo – Diego de Almagro 220 kV transmission line.
