Pollinator Garden Expansion

Thanks to your donations!

Our partner non-profit, ROWIA, is breaking ground on the pollinator garden expansion at Heaps Peak Arboretum. We finally got official approval to fund to this pollinator project with your donations and the Forest Service has already provided a list of plant recommendations along with extra milkweed and rabbitbrush for the garden! This effort will more than double the existing pollinator garden area and will help not only provide more habitat, but hopefully inspire and educate more visitors.

This Monday, Barbara got to work alongside these great volunteers that include a couple master gardeners and a full fledged botanist. There was lots of fun chatting while they were removing invasive species, and cultivating the soil getting it ready for planting.

November- Elephant Seals!

Another member of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and named for the big elephant-like noses on males. They spend most of their lives at sea, only living onshore for a few months every year to molt, mate, and give birth. Unlike other seals that shed year-round, these seals shed their first layer of skin and fur all at once, coming off in distinct sheets, termed a catastrophic molt. In the ocean they spend most of the time deep diving to depths around 1,500 feet! These big seals grow to 10-15 feet long and males weigh up to 4,500 pounds... as heavy as a car.

Like other species, the elephant seal was hunted to near extinction for its blubber that was used in lamp oil. Mexico gave them protected status when less than a hundred seals were left in Guadalupe Island, America soon followed suit. Their populations have since rebounded to about 160,000!

From us...

As many of you know, we've had a loved one in hospice, Grandma Betty. She passed away peacefully Tuesday night. She was a fabulous (one of her favorite words) quilter with a wonderful eye for color. It was one her best passions. For years she's belonged to a quilt group that sewed and donated comfort quilts to those in need in her small tight-knit mountain community. She loved living these last 20 years in the Colorado Rockies, a place she called heaven on earth. We shared so much together, especially our love of fiber and crafting. She was such a great support and cheerleader. We miss her dearly.
