Welcome to our Summer Newsletter

We've had a great start to the year so far, with our Come and Sing Evensong in Exeter Cathedral in February, and the Festival of Music in Worship at Tavistock Parish Church in April.

You will have had a flurry of emails from various organisations, asking for permission to keep in touch with you. The RSCM is no different, and we need to gather this information also: please see the section on Keeping in Touch further down this email. It is important that you do this, or we will not be able to keep you up to date with RSCM events.

Mike Ball Shield

Do you wish to nominate a young person?

This is presented at the annual RSCM Devon Area Festival, in memory of Mike Ball, a long-standing committee member who did a lot to encourage young people in their faith and their contribution to church music. It is presented to a young person in the Devon Area who has gone above and beyond what would normally be expected of a church chorister or instrumentalist. This is not necessarily aimed at the best singer or organist or drummer, but for doing something a little bit special.

If you feel that you have a young person to nominate for the Mike Ball Shield please ask your parish priest for his or her support, and contact Andrew Maries, our chairman by clicking the button below.

RSCM Voice for Life Awards

It is a really worthwhile thing to study for an RSCM Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. Bronze and Silver are examined locally, by trained and validated examiners, while Gold Awards are examined centrally by a rather more limited panel of specialist examiners.

The awards are aimed at choristers of all ages. While the ability to sing well is of course important, there are lots of other things in the syllabus which reflect that it is an examination for church choristers.  It is recommended that, to do a Bronze Award, you would need to devote about 15 hours of training, for a Silver significantly more, with a good deal of personal study as well, and the Gold needs to be approached rather like an A level – so a great deal of training and study as well as dedication.

If you are interested in an introductory or training session, please contact Nicholas Brown (nbrownpiano32@btinternet.com or 01297 560493). I can’t do the entire training, but I’m very happy to help with guidelines and I have some materials which might be useful. Please also contact me to arrange for an examination session (special visits can be made for 3 or more candidates or for one or two they can be added to a list at another centre in Devon).
The syllabus and music lists can be found on the RSCM national website. Some changes will be made over the next year, but these will essentially be made to the details, so the overall requirements of the syllabus remain the same.
