Baseball Returns to St. Louis!
St. Louis’ favorite summer pastime is coming back this week and we’re happy to see baseball return. Here’s a fun picture from the collection of the St. Louis Globe Democrat showing a squirrel (perhaps the first Rally Squirrel?) that had decided to make its new home out of a Rawlings Stan Musial Gift Set on a shelf at the Markwort Sporting Goods Store on April 12, 1956. This was likely taken at their Central West End location which closed in the 1970s. Markwort Sporting Goods still exists today as a distributor of sporting goods rather than a retail store, and Rawlings is still St. Louis-based and making equipment for professional baseball teams.
Like Yadi defending home plate, this squirrel resisted all attempts to get it to move.

(And for those of you who are curious, the squirrel was safely captured and taken to the humane society’s facility.)
