Exploring the collections of the Mercantile Library:

This Week, We Celebrate
National Pi Day!
The St. Louis Mercantile Library would like wish you a Happy Pi Day this March 14th. Pi day is so named because of the mathematical value of Pi being shortened to 3.14 and as Pi is used to calculate areas and circumferences of circles, it lends itself to the celebration of pie.
Here we have a page of recipes for dessert pies and more from the Southern Pacific Railroad’s promotional booklet “Our Dining Car Recipes” from around 1940. These two pages focus on dessert pies served on the railroad’s passenger trains. All of these dishes were served at one point or another during the year to passengers in the company’s dining cars. The food was prepared on the move and the pies were made fresh, not frozen, for the meal. The entire book of recipes, including some that don’t mesh well with the modern diner, can be found on the Digital Library.

Bon appetit!
