Happy National Rescue Dog Day
from the St. Louis Mercantile Library!
This week marks National Rescue Day for Dogs. The Mercantile wants to celebrate with these two images from our historic photo collection of canines of the past. I asked the staff to choose one for you, but both pictures are so full of love and devotion—a dog’s nature—I wanted you to enjoy both. Shelters are emptying out in these pandemic times as Americans are adopting furry companions for these stay-at-home days and that is a very special silver lining of the crisis. The Mercantile has collected images of man’s best friend since its inception, in prints, book illustrations, drawings and literature. It is nice to turn to that special collection now for a comforting bow (wow?) to the great pets that rescues make. I can attest that my rescued dog, Lady, rescued me and has befriended the entire Mercantile staff. Come to think of it, I need to get her pictures into the collection! --JNH
