"Called to Grow, Share, Serve"

Our Mission Statement
“A family of faith Called to Grow in the love of Christ,
Share that Good News, and Serve the world.”

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8

Join us this Sunday to Celebrate Pentecost!

This Sunday we celebrate what is often referred to as the “birthday of the Church,” as we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples at Pentecost.  Jesus promised his disciples that after he physically left them, that he would be with them forever and that he would send the Holy Spirit to be with them and to live within them all their days.  Every believer who confesses Jesus as Lord has received the gift of God’s presence in the Holy Spirit, who fills us with God’s peace and gives us the power to live and bear witness to him in our lives.  Sunday we will read the sacred story of the Spirit coming upon those disciples who boldly preached to all who had gathered in Jerusalem.  You could say it was the first evangelical crusade, for roughly 3,000 people came to faith in Jesus that day!

As we gather in worship, I encourage you to wear something red, not in honor of NC State, but because the liturgical color of the Spirit’s presence is red.  Luke says that the Spirit came upon them like “tongues of fire that rested on each of them.”  May we come excited, filled with the Spirit, to worship and celebrate God’s ongoing presence with us.  In addition, this will be my last Sunday with you before I start my Sabbatical leave.  We will participate in a Sabbatical commissioning after the sermon to acknowledge this transition.  I know the next 14 weeks will go well as you experience new voices preaching the Word of God to you.  My prayer is that God will renew you as God also renews me.  I’m grateful for all of your support, encouragement, and well wishes as I take this time away.  I implore you to support Steve Marks with the same love and encouragement that you always show me, as he fills in while I’m away.  I love you all dearly and look forward to rejoining you in September, rested, renewed, and filled with the Spirit to continue our good work together.  May God bless you and keep you until we meet again!

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Jeff

I Love to Tell the Story:  Reclaiming Evangelism as Good News
Rev. Dr. Jeffrey S. Smith

Over the last three Sundays I had the pleasure of sharing my doctoral project with many of you.  Thank you for participating and listening!  I recognize that some folks were unable to come, some came to one or two gatherings, and some made it to all three.  If you would like to read the entire work, it’s available in a pdf format, and the PowerPoint presentation I shared is also available to view.  We have also uploaded the audio from the last two classes.  You may find all of this on the church website by clicking this link:  https://www.firstpresboone.org/i-love-to-tell-the-story/

New Adult Class Beginning May 28. The Christology of Hebrews

According to Hebrews "The Best Just Got Better!"  on the other hand, William Barclay wrote, “When we come to read the Letter to the Hebrews we come to read what is, for the person of today, the most difficult book in the whole New Testament.” We will examine this New Testament Book, beginning May 28, as Doug Sterrett, will lead a study of its important contribution to Christian Theology. Join us every Sunday (9:30-10:20 am) in relocated Bible Discovery Class in Room 104. Alternatively, join us on Zoom. If you choose Zoom contact dougsterrett@gmail.com for the information needed to sign on.

“It’s Still Spring” Cleaning Day at First Pres
Saturday, June 10… 9:00am – Noon
There will be plenty to do… so if you have any time to help out that morning,
just come ready to lend a hand!

HELP US FEED
OUR NEIGHBORS AND THEIR CHILDREN this SUMMER!

11 years ago, a school counselor made a presentation at First Pres about the backpack program that sends food home on the weekends to children whose families struggle to provide for their family. Since these backpacks are not available in the summer, we started the Food 4 Families ministry which provides supplemental family-friendly food boxes and fresh produce every 2-3 weeks in the summer to families who are identified by school counselors.

We would love for you to join us in this ministry this summer! Here are some ways that you can help…

PRAY... that First Pres and our partner churches will share the love of Jesus with these families through this ministry. And, that God will lead each of us to do our part to love our neighbors.
VOLUNTEER… Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate!  We opened up the sign ups this past Sunday and there are still a few slots left. Take a look at your summer calendars to see if you will be available to help on any of the following dates:
  • June 19, July 10 and 24, August 7... make and label boxes, pack boxes of food, sort & pack produce, load the bus
  • Dates already full to… Deliver food to our partner churches: Bethel Baptist, High Country United Church of Christ, Laurel Springs Baptist, Mabel Methodist
Sign up Sunday in the Gathering Space!
Questions??? Ask anyone on the Food 4 Families Planning Team: Anna Eyler, Margaret Gregor, Frank and Jerri Mayberry, Stephen Sorrell, Sue Newell. Or email Sue Newell at alltogether@bellsouth.net.
