"Called to Grow, Share, Serve"

Our Mission Statement
“A family of faith Called to Grow in the love of Christ,
Share that Good News, and Serve the world”

I’m not sure if you made it to church Sunday, but needless to say there was a lot going on this weekend.  Our youth, children, and youthful minded adults led us in two shows of the Believe Christmas play.  Under the direction of Trimella Chaney and Mary Beth Walker, our students did a fabulous job!  I want to thank all of them and especially Trimella and Mary Beth for their leadership and hard work to bring it all together.
On Sunday morning we were blessed with our Lessons and Carols services, with the First Light Band leading us in song and then the Watauga High School Honors Choir and Women’s Choir leading us in our late service, under the direction of Brandon Winbush.  I want to thank Cindy Clawson and Brandon Winbush for their preparation and leadership to make our Lesson and Carols service special!
Sunday afternoon, our children gathered with some members of our choir and went Christmas caroling at Appalachian Brian Estates and at Deerfield Ridge.  It was a wonderful time of singing and sharing the Christmas spirit with all the residents who were able to be with us.  I want to thank Erin Fowler for organizing the event and thank Becca Eggers-Gryder for playing and leading everyone in song.
As you can see there’s been a lot of activity this Advent.  This Sunday we will conclude our sermon series, Finding Immanuel, as we gather on the last Sunday prior to Christmas.  If you still haven’t found Immanuel, I encourage you to come and learn how you can find him.  I also invite you to join us on Christmas Eve at 5:30pm for worship.  We invite our children to dress up as angels, shepherds, and stable animals as we read the Christmas story together.  I look forward to worshipping with you.  Blessings!
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Jeff

This 45 minute service will include lessons and carols, as well as our children participating in the nativity story. We encourage young children to dress up as angels, shepherds, and as stable animals for our time together. Our service will conclude with candle light.

Operation Christmas Child Update
Thank you to all who contributed your resources, time and prayer towards making disciples through Operation Christmas Child.
Your “mission gifts” will be distributed through partner churches around the world, where children will hear the gospel, and have the opportunity to be discipled through “The Greatest Journey.”
Please continue praying that the children who receive our OCC Shoeboxes over the next few months will understand how very much God loves them and will become seeking, serving disciples of Christ.
Gracias! Grazie! Merci! Salamat! Weebale! Dank je! Thank you!

Last week’s Advent Conspiracy article in the newsletter mentioned an upcoming focus on: Spend Less, Give More (without spending more), and Love All
But, what does Spend Less really mean? Spending less means to plan… instead of mindlessly shopping for more than we know what to do with, and take time to think about each purchase. By spending a little less on ourselves we are able to more joyfully give to others in need.
It is not enough to say no to the way Christmas is celebrated by many; we need to say yes to a different way of celebrating.
The Advent Conspiracy encourages us to rebel against consumerism by
spending less, and at the same time we are encouraged to give more… to give more intentionally and relationally. That means giving more of our time, our energy, our memories, our talents, our presence. Spend less money and give more of yourself to the ones you love.

When we give relationally, it’s an opportunity to worship as we remind each other of the gift that was given for our sake.

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14

If we resist giving easy gifts and reject the assumption that giving expensive gifts is the best way to express love, something else might begin to happen… others will witness us celebrating Christmas differently, and have the opportunity to hear the good news of the Gospel through our actions.

For ideas on how to Give More relationally, go to the Advent Conspiracy website:
ASU students will be leaving soon for the holidays, leaving the Hunger Coalition with more volunteer slots to fill than normal.  The need will run through the second week of January.  If you are interested in volunteering in the next month or so, or sometime in the future, please contact Seth LeJeune at . Thank for considering helping people not go hungry this holiday season!
