Happy Birthday Chesley!

Chesley Bonestell, "The Father of Space Art" was born on January 1st, 1888 in San Francisco. Today marks his 132nd birthday!

Here are other things that happened in 1888:
The Development of Film
Lick Observatory
- In 1888, Lick Observatory was founded on Mount Hamilton near San Jose, CA. In 1905, Chesley, then 17, visited Lick Observatory and viewed Saturn through their telescope, which inspired him to create his first work of space art. His painting of Saturn was unfortunately destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire of San Francisco.
The National Geographic Society is founded in 1888 in Washington, D.C. for "the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge." For their famous monthly magazine, Chesley would later provide artwork for one of their advertisers, Canadian Pacific Railway. This illustration, "The Canadian in the Bow River Valley" appeared in issues of the National Geographic magazine in 1955 and 1956.
