Filmmaker Douglass Stewart with Laemmle Royal Theatre Manager Lauren Brown.

For those that don’t know it, Southern California’s Laemmle Theatres (pronounced LEM-lee) are a highly-respected and family-owned theater chain that specializes in independent and art house movies. They first started business in 1938, and their family lineage can be traced back to Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal Pictures. We were so fortunate to have our Southern California theatrical premiere at four Laemmle theaters: West Los Angeles, Encino, Pasadena and Claremont.

It was a bit of a challenge for our small team to also host Q&A discussions after the screenings, but these were expertly handled by Associate Producer Chris Darryn, Co-Editor Kristina Hays, Principal Director of Photography Tim Branning, film participant Rocco Lardiere, and Producer Doug Stewart.

It must be said: we are very grateful to Greg Laemmle and his terrific staff for their support of our film!

Encore Screening with Special Q&A!

Impressed enough with our box office to request an encore, Greg Laemmle has scheduled a new screening of our film on August 12 at 7:30 PM at his Ahrya Fine Arts theatre in Beverly Hills!  If you are in the Los Angeles area, you don’t want to miss this one!

Our Q&A on August 12th will feature two very special guests, both of whom appeared in two George Pal science-fiction classics that Chesley Bonestell worked on.

Richard Derr and Barbara Rush from
When Worlds Collide (1951) (Paramount Pictures)
Ann Robinson in The War of the Worlds (1953) (Paramount Pictures)

Barbara Rush appeared in a lead role in the 1951 production of When Worlds Collide. Chesley Bonestell did many matte paintings for the film and designed the rocket that takes imperiled earthlings to the planet Zyra.

Ann Robinson starred as the female lead in the 1953 production of The War of the Worlds. Chesley's planetary artwork is prominently featured at the beginning of the film, setting the mood for the impending Martian invasion of Earth.

Both films won Oscars® for Special Effects, and we look foward to hearing the unique perspectives of these distinguished actresses.

Come join us on August 12th at 7:30 PM in Beverly Hills!

Film Reviews:

Radio station KPFK has a Film Club and after seeing the film at the Laemmle Claremont Theatre, they wrote an amazing review. Here's an excerpt:

"The documentary 'Chesley Bonestell: A Brush With The Future,' by Douglass M. Stewart Jr., is both remarkable, and fascinating...There are numerous interviews, and the enthusiasm of the participants is infectious, not static at all, with excellent work from the Director, Editor, and Director of Photography."

A Mile High Tribute to Chesley Bonestell!

Just two days after the Laemmle screenings and smack in the middle of the Apollo 11 celebrations, Doug Stewart and Rocco Lardiere flew to Denver, CO and were joined by David Aguilar for a screening of the film and a Q&A at the stunning Wings Over The Rockies aerospace museum. Rocco, a rocket engineer, and David, an artist author and astronomer, appear extensively throughout our film.

(From L to R) Space Artist and Astronomer David Aguilar, Curator Matthew Burchette, Filmmaker Doug Stewart and Rocket Engineer Rocco Lardiere.
Hosted by "Wings" Curator Matthew Burchette as part of their "Apollopalooza" celebration, the event was a great experience for everyone who attended. There was even a couple who drove almost 700 miles from Flagstaff, Arizona   to come see the film! We sincerely thank Matthew, Wings Over The Rockies President John L. Barry and their great staff that helped make this screening possible.

We Rocked with our Doc in Little Rock!

A screening of the film was held Friday evening, July 23 in Little Rock, AK. Sponsored by the Central Arkansas Astronomical Society, here are a few excerpts from a report by by the CAAS’s Darrell Heath, to whom we are most grateful!

"We had about 100 people in attendance tonight. Judging by the applause and number of folks who came up to me afterward to tell me how much they enjoyed the film, I can certify that we had a success. I’m happy that the name of Chesley Bonestell is becoming known to a whole new generation of admirers and that his work still manages to both awe and inspire people. Kudos to you and all who were involved with this project."

Clear Skies,

Darrell Heath
