What strikes you as beautiful?

Art, I think, goes beyond culture, beyond nations. It’s just something which ties everyone together, it cannot be put in a box or defined. It’s boundless; it’s limitless.

Be Yourself

Our current show features Clara Kim, a Korean-Canadian artist whose work explicitly combines Eastern and Western techniques to create an extraordinarily vibrant effect. The show's signature work, shown above, refers to her aspiration to unify her diverse influences into a unique vision.

Clara Kim ~ Be Yourself
June 9 - 29
“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

― Oscar Wilde

"I was born in South Korea and took inspiration from both Canadian and Korean cultures. I utilize the concept of The Beauty of White Space.

"In traditional Korean art, white space acts as a blank canvas to the people, allowing them opportunities for imagination, while the simplicity of the background draws attention to the highlight of the piece. My art aims to combine the simple background and strong expression to display luxury in simplicity, passion hidden in calmness and beauty within sorrow."

Clara's signature thick-texture technique and rich saturated palette is western and modernist, while her subject matter and composition draws upon and often hews to traditionally East Asian tradition.

In addition to florals, Clara's favourite themes include frogs and chickens. Sometimes she portrays them on enormous canvases!

"When I was young, my dad taught me how to feed me frogs and play with chickens. I tied a string on a long twig, put little pumpkin petals on it, and shook it so that the petals moved as if they were fishing. The frog would then jump and eat the petals. Then I put on new petals and played with them again to feed other frogs. About the chasing game with chickens, I scared the chicken and made it run away, and I chased the chicken. In about 10 seconds, the chicken would forget all about what had happened, and walked leisurely again. So it was fun because I didn't feel guilty about frightening the chicken because I know the chicken would forget it soon."

In Korean culture, frogs are a symbol of water and happiness. Chickens are a symbol of wealth and abundance. In Korean folklore, the cries of a frog symbolize the importance of respecting one's parents.

“Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
― George Bernard Shaw

Florals, of course, are a traditional artistic theme of the Far East, and here, Clara's synthesis of western technique and eastern aesthetic leads to particularly stunning compositions!

We're Open Again!

As Ontario begins to reopen, we are allowed to operate at "15% of capacity". We're interpreting this to mean that we can allow at most two people from one household to visit at a time. We are excited to welcome visitors starting this Friday, June 11.

In addition to Clara Kim's work, we have other works by quite a few unique and talented artists.

Our open hours will be 11 AM - 7 PM, Thursdays through Saturdays.

We are frequently on site at other times. Unless a "Do Not Disturb" sign is in the door (usually because we're on a conference call), we'll welcome visitors at such times as well, "by happenstance".

Also we can set up an appointment, which you might prefer if you're coming from a distance, given that we can currently only allow one household to visit at a time. Call us at 613 748 2008.

Clara's very strong exhibit definitely merits a visit! As usual, online photographs don't do art full justice. We encourage you to come by and have a look, to get the full impact of these marvelous artworks. Welcome back!

Canadian Landscapes & Ottawa Cityscapes

(shown is The Jack Pine by Tom Thomson; unfortunately we do not currently have it in stock)

We're looking for Canadian rural and wildlife landscapes, always a popular theme with our customers!

We're also on the lookout for artists who can produce interesting representations of landmarks and streetscapes that are recognizably Ottawan.

Both of these interests are ongoing; we'll always want to look at those. That said, we're heading toward a Canadiana theme starting around Canada Day and running through the summer and are eager to find suitable artworks, especially paintings.

Artists who have not exhibited previously in the gallery are invited to start the process of applying by reading our submissions page.

Please help us support local art and local artists!
We're located just off the Rideau Pathway, so wander by on your urban hike, visit the geese, take in the early summer scenery, and have a peek at our display windows while you're in the neighbourhood!
As always, we try to keep the Gallery windows interesting for passers-by.

While we're happy to welcome visitors again, curbside pickup and local delivery (within the city limits) remain available.
We also can ship many of our pieces within North America.

We and our artists greatly appreciate
you shopping locally!
