Here are Five Things to Know this month about riding in and around Rockland County.
  1. August 22 General Meeting, 7p, Growler & Gill, 148 Rt. 59, Nanuet. You've challenged Rockland hills all summer. Now it's time to challenge your taste buds with your best biking friends. Join us for suds and stories.
     
  2. Rock Around Rockland Club Ride, September 23, 8a, starting and ending at David's Bagels, 64 N. Main St., New City. This RBC event offers three routes (38, 63 and 100 miles) entirely within Rockland County. Both the 100 and 63 mile routes include Harriman Park for some of the best cycling around. GPS routes and cue sheets will be available. We recommend participants buddy-up for this self-paced, unsupported ride. Deli, water, and bathroom stops will be noted in advance. Emergency contact numbers will be provided. Please register in advance to help us with planning and logistics.
     
  3. New Membership rates:  Our new member rates are now in effect: Individuals $25, Families $40. A two-year membership is available for individuals at $40 and family at $70.
     
  4. Coming this fall: A new RocklandBike.org:  In order to provide better member services, we are renovating our web site. We think our site will be state-of-the-art for cycling organizations with tons of information about rides and ways to communicate with the club. If you have experience and interest in helping us launch this new website, please email RocklandBike@gmail.com.

This month's Rockland Cycling Feature: Edward Hopper’s Bike Obsession. The 1937 painting, French Six-Day Bicycle Rider, was inspired by the Nyack native American realist painter's watching bike races in Madison Square Garden. Hopper had been an avid cyclist as a teenager. Cycling and drawing were two activities that freed Hopper from the confines of village life in the 1890s.
