Maundy Thursday, April 9
Maundy Thursday is something we haven’t observed at SBC in the recent past, as we have focused our attention on Good Friday. Maundy Thursday (from Latin: mandatum - mandate, or commandment) commemorates the Last Supper and Jesus’ giving the command, “Do this, in remembrance of me,”(Luke 22:19) as well as John 13:34: “A new command I give you: Love one another.”
As we are already meeting tonight, at 8:15, we’ve decided to commemorate Maundy Thursday, and include a communion celebration. You might be thinking, “But we just had communion on Sunday!” which is true. However, given that this is the week leading to Easter, and that we are also physically separated from one another, it seems right to remind ourselves again that Jesus gave his body to join us together as one body, and that Jesus allowed his blood to be spilled to join us to the Father in a new covenant!
Communion today (Thursday)
To celebrate Good Friday, we will be holding a special two-part gathering. At 8:00 pm we will post a Facebook Live stream with scripture, music and a brief meditation. When that is finished, around 8:45, we will invite anyone who wants to join us on Zoom for a time of prayer. We will be praying for our nation, and for the world in this time of crisis. In Matthew 26:38, Jesus says to Peter, James and John, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Our desire is to do just that, to spend time keeping watch with him.
