Investigators deem downtown fire caused by arson

Following an extensive and ongoing investigation of the December 15, 2021, fire in Downtown Olympia, investigators have determined the fire to be an arson.

Officers from the Olympia Police Department (OPD) and firefighters from the Olympia Fire Department were dispatched after 5 a.m. on December 15 to a commercial structure fire located at the intersection of Olympia Avenue N. and Capital Way N. Officers arrived to find the (under construction) Market Flats apartment complex fully engulfed in flames. Soon thereafter four of the five stories collapsed.

Several nearby buildings were also heavily damaged or destroyed. OPD requested the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). OPD and ATF engaged in a joint operation to determine the cause of the fire. Investigators from both agencies spent several days processing the scene.

Damage is estimated to be between $5 million and $7 million. The ATF is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the fire. Photos are attached of persons of interest in this case and investigators are seeking assistance to identify them.

Anyone with information on the person or persons responsible for the fire should contact ATF at 1-888-ATF-TIPS (888-283-8477), email, or contact ATF through its website at
