Last Chance: Review the Draft Water System Plan

The Draft 2021-2026 Water System Plan is available for review and comment through December 12, 2022.

Trash Grease to Protect Pipes
It may seem harmless to pour cooking oil, melted butter or bacon grease down the drain, but they solidify as they cool, causing clogs in household plumbing or the sewer system. Those clogs can cause sewage to back up into your home, business, streets or the environment.

Instead, collect grease in an empty can or jar and dispose in the garbage once it turns solid. Visit LOTT's WET Science Center to pick up a free kit to manage grease and protect your pipes; the kit includes a reusable lid and scraper.

Used cooking oil can also be recycled – look for the collection station at the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center.

Using Deicers

During the winter, some of us turn to deicers to keep stairs and walkways clear of snow and ice, not realizing that they contain chemicals that can be harmful to our pets, plants, soil, wildlife and our waters.

If you choose to use a deicer, use as little as possible. Here are some tips to help you this winter:
  • Follow label instructions carefully – using more will not speed up melting.
  • Apply before snow and ice accumulate.
  • If it has already snowed, remove as much snow as possible before applying.
  • Remove shoes/boots before entering your home.
  • Block off slippery areas you don’t need to use, instead of applying deicer.
  • Wipe the paws of your dogs and cats after they have been outside.
