Additionally, even though the stock market has had a correction this year, donating appreciated stock directly to Salem Friends of Felines can still be an attractive option. For stock investments that would result in long-term capital gains (outside of an IRA or a 401K), rather than write a personal check to the organization, transfer the stock and let Salem Friends of Felines sell it for you. By doing so you "give away" the capital gain income but get a deduction for the full value of the stock. The important thing is that you must give the stock directly, don't sell it yourself.
Or, if you are over 70½ and have funds in an IRA you would like to donate, ask your investment advisor about a "Qualified Charitable Distribution" from your account. They will send money directly to Salem Friends of Felines and you won't have to include it in your income.
