Dear Salem Friends of Felines Supporters,

During this public health crisis, we want you to know we are working hard to ensure the health and safety of our staff, volunteers, shelter visitors and of course, the cats!  Our staff and volunteers already keep a sanitary shelter environment, but we are taking additional steps to prevent the spread of any illnesses.  We are asking staff and volunteers to stay home if they feel ill, rescheduling upcoming large group events and increasing our cleaning of high touch surfaces.  At this time our shelter and thrift store remain open to the public during our normal business hours.  However, this may change as we continue to respond to the current recommendations from the CDC, WHO, and local authorities.  Thank you for your understanding and support.

There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be passed between humans and companion animals (like dogs and cats), according to the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.  However, emergency situations like this remind us that there are preparations that can be made to protect our pets.  Please make sure your pet’s microchip information is current.  Ensure you have an adequate supply of food and pet supplies in case you need to stay home for an extended period of time.  Keep your pet’s veterinary records (vaccines, medication, etc) and your veterinarian’s contact information easily accessible.  Identify a person (family member, friend, or neighbor) who can provide temporary pet care in case of an emergency.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to follow the recommendations of our public health officials.  Please continue to check our website and Facebook page for updates.

Our shelter continues to operate based on the generosity of our donors.  We have already been impacted by the decrease in retail spending and will likely see more of this in the coming days and weeks.  If you are able, please continue to support the cats and kittens in our care by donating on our website or Facebook page, donating items for our thrift store or bringing cans and bottles for us to return. Please visit our Ebay store and Offer Up for online shopping.  We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued love and support.

All events are currently cancelled - our Chipotle fundraiser and Purrs and Pints will be rescheduled when we can.

If you are thinking of adopting a cat or kitten, now would be a great time to bring one of these sweeties into your life.
