Dear JCI Members and Friends,

Happy new year! On behalf of JCI Scotland National Board 2021, I am delighted to invite each and every one of you to experience all that JCI has to offer in the coming year. This is our first newsletter of 2021, and we’ve filled it with exciting updates to help you start this year with a bang. We’d also like to extend an extra special welcome to our wonderful new members who have joined over the past couple of months. Hopefully we can all meet face-to-face sometime soon, but in the meantime, please do connect and collaborate with each other informally or through events hosted by JCI Aberdeen, JCI Edinburgh and JCI Glasgow.

As of 1st January 2021, we have new leadership teams across JCI Scotland, and each new Local President has been extremely busy with their respective local boards so that we can bring you a great calendar of events.
Nationally, our first event of the year is our kickstart 2021 event, an energising and inspiring collaboration with JCI UK, JCI Ireland and JCI Malta. Building on our JCI Tri-Nations success, we are extremely excited about this partnership and where it may go and have even given ourselves a new name – JCI Collaborations. Not to worry, our Tri-Nations friendship with Ireland and UK still stands – and we have a reputation to live up to!

The other National Presidents and I have been shaping this event over the past couple of months and I’m truly excited to share the programme with JCI Scotland members. In the morning, we have an inspiring keynote speaker, followed by an introduction to JCI RISE project planning & collaboration. After lunch, we have a short networking session followed by an opportunity to attend Effective Leadership, a JCI Official Course. Finally, we end the day with a hands-on project planning session where members will collaborate and develop their JCI RISE projects… and of course, there’s an evening social for those who want to stay on!

We see this event as an investment in our members and so we agreed to deliver this event at no cost to you. Yet while tickets are free, we do require all attendees to register through Eventbrite.
As we now start to look ahead, our Local Presidents would like to share their thoughts on what 2021 may hold.
What is the focus of your Local Organisation in 2021?
Daniel: For JCI Aberdeen, 2021 is all about reconnection and growing our membership. We want to connect with civil society, local charities and businesses to help our members benefit and grow throughout 2021. 2020 was a very difficult year for a lot of people and JCI Aberdeen would like to help as many people as we can to improve through our organisation.
Valérie: Our focus for JCI Edinburgh in 2021 is working together, with old and new partners and with members, to make JCI Edinburgh the best well-known secret of Edinburgh and to have fun celebrating our 75th anniversary!
Renata: My goal is to increase the visibility of JCI Glasgow to young professionals in Glasgow and the surrounding area.
What are you most looking forward to in JCI this year?
Daniel: The thing I love about JCI is the opportunity to meet loads of different people from all over the world and from so many different backgrounds. In my year as Local President, I’d like to connect with as many people as possible and try to learn some new skills. So, for me, it’s all about learning, meeting new people and trying something new.
Valérie: I’m looking forward to seeing all the amazing things our members will get up to this year, and to see them step outside of their comfort zones, learn and grow. I’m also really looking forward to celebrating JCI Edinburgh’s 75th anniversary this year, as well as hosting JCI Scotland’s 2021 National Conference. Of course, I can’t wait to see everybody face-to-face again, when we can!
Renata: Good question! I’m really excited to bring even more networking, development and learning opportunities to young professionals in Glasgow and beyond!
Finally, as National President, I am here to help you get the most out of your JCI membership and support the growth of our national organisation. 2020 was a tough year for many, so if you ever need a friendly chat or would like to find out more about the opportunities for you in JCI, then please reach out.
All the best in 2021,
Katie Black
