Aquarium Drunkard: Sidecar / July 30, 2018

Nearly August. The year's moving too fast. Welcome to Aquarium Drunkard's bi-monthly dispatch of audio esoterica, interviews, mixtapes, and cultural ephemera, presented by Gold Diggers boutique hotel, bar and recording studios in East Hollywood, Calif.

The Lagniappe Sessions :: Wilder Maker

Hot on the heels of his new album Zion under the Wilder Maker banner, Gabriel Birnbaum sits down for an exclusive Lagniappe Session, covering Jessica Pratt's "Back, Baby" and AM gold kings Bread's "Baby I'm-A Want You."

"I’m a sucker for a lot of soft rock...I think it’s hard now to express sentiments like the one in this song without a wink or some obligatory, wry acknowledgment that they’re unoriginal, but originality isn’t what makes love interesting," Birnbaum says. Spin the selections now at AD; they're lovely.

Fleetwood Mac :: Albatross (Blend)

And while we're on the subject of lovely: Do you need a two-and-a-half-hour megamix of Fleetwood Mac's celestial masterpiece "Albatross?" Sure you do. Over at Soundcloud, Keith Fuller Whitman stitches together various versions recorded between 1968-1970,
"in a program that loops three times; almost entirely dry, then slowly fading in the reverb signal, finally slowly fading out the dry signal."

Various Artists :: Freedom of the Press

From brand new label Kith and Kin, Freedom of the Press "is not only an expertly put-together and flow-tastic hour of music...it’s also for a good cause..." Featuring entirely donated music from some of the leading lights of the modern psychedelic/songwriter movement, including Wooden Wand, the Weather Station, 75 Dollar Bill, Trummors, Sunwatchers, One Eleven Heavy and many more, all proceeds from the comp go directly to the Freedom of the Press Foundation, a non-profit founded by Trevor Timm, Rainey Reitman, and the late Dead lyricist and cyber activist lyricist John Perry Barlow, with the aim of protecting and defending "adversarial journalism in the 21st century."

Enter the Saccharine ::  Yacht & Beyond

The extremely smooth sounds keeping us floating at AD HQ. Sail on over to our Spotify page to subscribe to this playlist of essential yacht, AOR, blue-eyed soul, and beyond.

Transmissions Podcast :: Remembering Richard Swift/Yosuke Kitazawa/Strange Stars: David Bowie, Pop Music, and the Decade Sci-Fi Exploded

Speaking of playlists, we compiled this one in honor of the late, great Richard Swift, and for the July edition of our Transmission Podcast, we dedicated a third of the show to his legacy and impeccable songcraft. Also featured: crate digger and producer Yosuke Kitazawa details Light in the Attic Records’ Japan Archival reissue series, and we explore the overlap between sci-fi and music with a look at Jason Heller's Strange Stars: David Bowie, Pop Music, and the Decade Sci-Fi Exploded.
