Prayers for Richard

Little Richard, one of the innovators, gone at 87. No shortage of incredible pieces to read about the man, but David Ramsey's Oxford American piece Prayers for Richard is especially poignant: Keep Little Richard in your prayers. Praise and thanksgiving. And intercession too. May he find comfort and ease. May he find a little more of that old rhythm, a little more of that wild light.

Circles Around the Sun: S/T

Recorded a week before the passing of guitarist Neal Casal, the deep-fried boogies of Circles Around the Sun suggest a Giorgio Moroder produced Shakedown Street. Exploring the middle ground between psych and disco, Circles Around the Sun III is all fat Moog basslines and slinky speedball guitars, with a fair amount of studious jazz fusion in the mix for good measure.

Range and Basin: Mondays, Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard, 20:00 PDT

Jason P. Woodbury's Range and Basin on RFAD is moving to Mondays, so tune in tonight at 20:00 PDT for borderland mirages, devotional kosmische musik, divining rod blues.

Grammy-Winning Soul Singer Betty Wright Dies at Age 66

Betty Wright has passed at 66. Combining funk, soul and R&B, her work not only made her a star, but would go on to profoundly influence the world of music that came after her heyday. Tune into "Girls Can't Do What the Guys Do," what a heavy gem.

Sven Wunder: Eastern Flowers

The brilliant debut from the mysterious Sven Wunder came out of nowhere and left all the heads spinnin’ and scramblin’ to find an LP copy, which are currently few and far between. Eastern Flowers is brimming with gnarly bass and guitars, big drum breaks, and hairy synths, all of which are projected through a kaleidoscopic filter of modern and traditional Eastern sounds. This is one of the best albums you will hear this year. Here’s hoping for a repress soon.
