Response from City Council to ICE Threats

Owing to the ongoing threats of ICE raids across the country, we are reposting Portland City Council's response. You can find our earlier Civic Life Update with resources here.

Dear Portlanders,
President Trump has announced his intention to increase deportations throughout the country in coming weeks. To be clear, these policies cause irreparable harm to affected Portlanders, their loved ones, and our communities at large. The City of Portland is proud to stand with our immigrant communities as we continue to reject the hateful rhetoric and actions of this administration.
As affirmed by our 2017 Welcoming, Inclusive, Sanctuary City resolution, we know that we are safer, healthier, and more prosperous when we commit to the inclusion and protection of all our residents. Last year, we were proud to launch Oregon’s first removal defense program, in partnership with Equity Corps of Oregon, Multnomah County, and many community partners. We are also proud to continue standing with our immigrant communities in times of celebration to highlight their many contributions to the fabric of our City.
In coming months, we ask all Portlanders to be mindful about sharing accurate information to avoid stoking additional fear and trauma. We are proud of how Portlanders continue to show up for one another—through legislative action, financial contributions, peaceful demonstrations, and volunteer time. These times require the best of all of us and we commit to continuing to represent and defend the rights of everyone in our community.
