Reflection

Dear All

Advent – the beginning of an event that brings in something new and gives us hope for our days ahead.

As we thank the Lord for the liturgical year that becomes history, it is time to look forward and prepare ourselves for what God plans to offer us.

Of course we hope for a post-Covid-19 world, a scandal free Vatican, righteous leadership with a vision to promote the wellbeing of all the peoples of the world, the wellbeing of our planet and its life supporting systems…‘so that God may be all in all’.

‘We all fade like a leaf … yet, O Lord, you are our Father, we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand’ (Isaiah 64: 6, 8).

Let us learn to walk with the Lord.

Father Anthony Xavier OSM

Prayers of the Faithful

We pray for Pope Francis as he leads the Church into its first Advent under his reign.  May it be a time of renewal for the whole Church and for the world as it struggles to navigate the issues that divide its people, and be more open to receiving all those in His name.

We pray for world leaders as they struggle to make their nations the best possible places for their citizens, that they take into account how their efforts for security impact upon their neighbours and their environment.

We pray for the ones burdened with suffering, especially those who have lost hope and find no meaning in their lives. We pray that they hear and welcome the Good News brought to them by those who care that salvation is close at hand.

We pray for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  That the community may support their work and the other agencies in the Church that endeavor to share God’s love with children and families who are struggling during this season.

St Vincent de Paul - Annual Christmas Appeal

Did you know that more than 13 % of Australia's overall population - or about 3.24 million people - live below the poverty line, according to an Australian Council of Social Service (ACOS) and University of New South Wales in a report released in February 2020 (pre-Covid).

  • About 774,000 children under 15 years, or 17.7% of Australian children are in poverty.
  • Poverty, the Australian Council of Social Service says, has become a consistent feature of Australian life, with millions still living below the poverty line despite 27 years of uninterrupted economic growth.
  • A survey of young people on Youth Allowance found 9 in 10 skip meals and 1 in 3 have withdrawn from their studies because of a lack of funds.
  • A survey of people on Newstart found more than 8 in 10 regularly skip meals and more than half have less than $15 a day left after housing costs.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal Weekend 28/29 November 2020
The St Vincent de Paul Society extends our sincere gratitude for your very generous support in providing non-perishable food for the poor and needy in our community throughout 2020.
This year we are planning to distribute up to 45 Christmas Hampers to local individuals & families in need.
The students and parents of St Denis Primary School are assisting us but we also need help from you, the Parishioners, with food and Christmas presents to fill these hampers.
If you wish you can select a star from the notice board and buy a special Christmas gift or a gift voucher for a child or teenager which will be placed in their Christmas hamper.

We will distribute hampers on Sunday 20 December, so please place food donations and any wrapped gifts with star attached (so that we know what is in the parcel) in or near the blue Vinnies bins in the foyer of the church by Sunday 13 December.

We will also accept financial donations which can be put in the envelopes marked SVDPS and placed in the collection boxes.

Suggested food donations:
  • Christmas cakes, fruit mince pies

Christmas With The Giovanni Consort
Friday December 11th

Perth’s St. Mary’s Cathedral will be shining as bright as the Star of Bethlehem for a one night only performance of “Christmas with the Giovanni Consort”. Perth’s finest young singers will be presenting an evening of glorious Christmas music, reimagined and given new life by West Australian composers Perry Joyce, Lydia Gardiner, and Joshua Adams (who is also Head Cantor at St Mary's Cathedral). Partnering with the choir on the Cathedral’s mammoth pipe organ will be internationally renowned musician and “Australia’s Wunderkind Organist” (ABC TV) Alessandro Pittorino. Conducting the whole program will be the Giovanni Consort’s Artistic Director, Hugh Lydon. To cap the whole event off, the Cathedral will be spectacularly bathed in light by the incredible team at GSD productions.

Our singers for Christmas with the Giovanni Consort will be sopranos Bonnie De La Hunty, Jessica Taylor, and Kate McNamara; altos Amber Lister, Stef Parr, and Lydia Gardiner; tenors Jason Kroll, Kieran Lynch, and Josh Adams; and basses David Buckley, Francis Cardell-Oliver, and David Penco.

This magical concert will be performed at St Mary’s Cathedral on Friday December 11, commencing at 7.30pm. There is ample parking available at the City of Perth car park located next to the Westin Hotel. Due to stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions, there will be limited seating available and booking is essential. Tickets can be purchased at www.giovanniconsort.com

St Denis Parish COVID-19 Guidelines

GATHERING SPACES
Due to the Government regulations of the 2 square metre rule and the need for cleaning and sanitising
  • All gatherings/meetings are to occur in the body of the church utilising the pews in the church.
    • The Marian Chapel is closed to the public at this time;
    • The foyer of the church is not available for meetings and for other programs e.g. line dancing;
    • The Parish Centre including the Nolan Room and the outdoor courtyard are not available for use.
    • The out-door toilets are closed.

  • Social distancing to be observed at all times.  1.5 metres between people; 2 square metres per person at meetings/prayer gatherings within the body of the church.

  • No social gatherings involving the sharing of food and drinks are permitted indoors or outdoors on St Denis property.  In line with the government requirements of ‘Safety First’ the sharing of food, serving utensils, serviettes etc is strongly discouraged.  For example the parish kitchen is only big enough for 1 person at a time.

Cleaning and Sanitizing
  • Every person entering the church is required to sanitize their hands or to wash their hands with soap and water which is provided in the bathroom area.

  • Cleaning and Sanitizing of the church after each gathering (prayer groups, mass, etc.) is to be completed by the people who have gathered using the sanitiser and cloths provided in the church. Cloths to be put in buckets provided at the doors of the church

Signing in *** starting again 05 December 2020
  • Every person coming into the church is required to register their name and phone number in our sign in books provided in the foyer of the church. This is to enable contact tracing in case of an outbreak of Covid-19 and is a government requirement.

Seating arrangements
  • The maximum number at this stage is 100.
We have 65 individual places marked out. However, if families/couples/people from one household come to mass they can sit beside each other without having to observe the 1.5 metre social distancing rule. This will allow up to 100 people in the church. Please move into the centre of the seat so that people who come later won’t have to ‘climb over you’.

At present, due to social distancing, sanitising etc. -
  • Acolytes, altar servers, sacristan and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are not required.

  • The Lector is invited to sit in the body of the church and to move to the sanctuary when required.

  • We will not be having entrance/recessional processions or Offertory processions.

  • No communion from the Chalice.

  • No communion on the tongue.  Please receive communion in the hand, and remain standing – kneeling makes it far to difficult for Father to remain socially distanced from the communicant.

  • Hymn books, loose prayer sheets, etc are not to be used.

At present we are unable to -
  • Distribute hard copies of our parish bulletin – if you would like to receive a copy of our bulletin via email please sign up using the links at the bottom of this newsletter or email newsletter@stdenis.com.au

 Sacraments
  • The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
The communal celebration of the Anointing of the Sick is to be temporarily suspended.

The contact details (name, phone number, address and/or email address) of each person entering the church for Confession must be recorded and retained. No record should be kept of the reason for the person’s presence in the church.
