Escaping the Wasteland
I haven't posted a blog entry in awhile because I've not been inspired, until now.  Reading Sharon Blackie's book, If Women Rose Rooted, she discusses escaping the Wasteland.  I so resonated with this idea...escaping the clutches of patriarchy and jobs that exploit or suck the soul out of workers.  Sharon Blackie reminded me of who I am.  The person I'd lost for awhile.  You probably know, I've been talking and teaching about new values, specifically feminine values, myself, for years.  (Take a look at my youtube video links near the end of this newsletter, Reawakening Our Earliest Sacred Stories and Living Happy.)  Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we shouldn't have to work.  I'm saying I don't believe we were meant to commute an hour or more to work, sit in a cubicle all day, deal with all the stuff we deal with while there with nasty co-workers and the narcissistic abuse of our fearless leaders, then commute an hour or more to get home.

I mean, when was the last time anyone asked you, "How's the quality of your life?"

It's worse for women.  We leave the job and go home and work some more.   When home we cook, clean, feed the kids, help with homework, wash clothes, get ready to start it all over again.  And again.  And again.  With our only refuge on busy weekends and the occasional vacation.

We don't get equal pay for equal work.  Maybe we're demeaned or chased around the desk.  The many jobs touted to be out there are lousy with no benefits.  How did we get here?  Why are we tolerating it?  What can you do to escape the Wasteland?  (I love that term of Blackie...Wasteland.  That's what it is!)  We have to start thinking about our escape.  As women especially, we can't keep perpetuating this dominator, exploitative, life and soul sucking predator capitalistic model.  It wasn't always like this and it can be greatly improved.  I'm not going to start talking about the answer being Democratic Socialism (not the same as Socialism) a la' Bernie Sanders, even though I think that's a step in the right direction.  I want to talk about getting you thinking about how you can escape the Wasteland.

You've no doubt attained a lot of skills working in the Wasteland.  You have life experience too.  How can you turn these into something different for yourself and your future?  Sure, it involves risk, but what's the trade-off?   Is being a good little uber-consumer worth the price you're paying?  Do you really need all the stuff?  Is it filling that hole inside you?  Really? Really?

Imagine instead doing something that really fed your passion.  That connected you to Nature or the values you talk about or dream about.  How about really reconciling your spirituality with your politics and your work?   In Blackie's book, she gives examples of women who have broken the cycle of misery of the Wasteland.  Many of us can if we try.  And maybe we don't make it the first time we try, so we try again.  Maybe you become a herbalist, a caterer, teach classes freelance, write books, give talks, clean houses or babysit, walk dogs, become a personal concierge, edit books for aspiring authors, lead tours.  Maybe it's a combination of talents combined that gets you out of the Wasteland.  Maybe it means you downsize.  Maybe you hunker down and save some money if you can to make this break but won't your freedom be worth it?   Maybe you start something up on the side while you plan your escape.  Aren't you tired of getting that tightness in your chest taking the train, sitting in bumper to bumper traffic or not getting a raise in years?  Break the cycle sisters.   Start a support group of other like-minded women who want to break free of the Wasteland!  Forget Black Fridays and Purple Saturdays.  Resist the call of the Wasteland that keeps you trapped!

Think about it sisters -- Start formulating a plan.
Escape the Wasteland!

We can't keep doing the same things over and over and expect different results.  Sometimes we're stuck and need someone to show us the doors and windows opening before us....or the doors and windows we need to slam open ourselves.  We might need some inspiration.  Someone to take us by the hand.  Books can do this for us.  Books can be that friend!

We all have our favorite books on our shelves.  Sometimes we read them again and again because when we go back to them we understand things differently.  We catch things we might have missed the first time around.  Maybe they give us new inspiration or give comfort.

Good books hold their value, never go out of style and stay relevant.....
